QuoteIn fact, the area is not safe.

Would you care to back that statement up with something of more depth, other than careless words?

I don't live in North Miami, I live in Avondale, if I wanted to deficate on North Miami, I'd have some facts to back up my position as well.

Dear mtraininjax,

Perhaps my post and user name proved confusing:

I too live in Avondale.Lot's of involvement one way or another since 1979.Home owner.

This is absolutely terrible!!! I drive that intersection all the time. What is happening out there? My house in Avondale was burglarized last week (I wasnt home - and I now have a security system) and I am still in shock, but I agree with some of the other people posting - I think it is important to have a gun and know how to use it especially for women. I have never owned one before but have started doing research - does anyone have any suggestions what kind? where to buy??? I am torn between the glock 19 and a S&W revolver or maybe I should get both. thanks!

Great, like I said, why don't you provide facts to back up your, so far, baseless argument that the Riverside/Avondale area is, as you say "not safe".

QuoteI am torn between the glock 19

Lindsey,

Sorry to hear about your house. I've had an alarm for our house for 10 years, when it goes off, it is one loud son of a gun, screaming Intruder Detected, Intruder....miserably loud, especially if you set it off by accident. If you own a house without an alarm, you are rolling the dice for a future break-in. If I am a criminal, why break into a house with an alarm, when I can get into one with no noise? Dogs are also great deterrents.

The JSO uses all glocks. I am sure you know a few on the force, so a great resource for the Glock product.

Stay well,
Jack

for home protection you should get a mossberg pump shotgun 12 gauge.  Handguns are fine, but they aren't that accurate when you're heart is racing a million miles an hour and someone is trying to evade you.  I also agree with my friend MTrain....Dogs, as someone who lives in Springfield I've never had a break in and neither have my neighbors and we both have dogs and they are really happy to see you when you get home.  Go to Shooters on University and ask for Ray, he'll give you a good deal and get you something nice for home protection.

Karl - Good idea, the 12 guage is the perfect solution, besides man's best friend, for home protection. Even if its not loaded, a simple action of "Check-Check" on the shotgun is loud enough to tell the intruder, you mean business. A buddy of mine purchased a 12 guage for around 250 recently, so they are affordable, and fun to shoot, if you like shooting clay pigeons or more lively fowl.

I can not think of any sound scarier than hearing a pump action shotgun being locked and loaded in the dark. maybe a chain saw being cranked..but that click-click sound, coming from a darkened space would certainly get my attention, if I were a criminal, which I am not.

mtrain questions the observation that Riverside/Avondale is not safe yet generates 'hero level' flood of posts promoting home alrm systems and defensive weapons.

So far,as a newbie I am thinking that the metro forum will be of limited usefuklness.

"safe" is relative.

avondale is extremely 'safe', while the vast majority of riverside is 'safe'.

When criminals are mobile, there really is no such thing as completely safe. If they feel that someone "owes" them for their shitty life, they'll find someone to take it out on and what better place than where everyone feels so safe?

I also am a newbie and feel this is an odd conversation about which is the best gun. Someone already cited statistics on gun usage and as a mother with two small children this is not a practical or moral decision suited for us. I am more concerned about community policing and a sense of taking back our neighborhood so that I can, in fact, run, take my children for a walk and my husband can continue to ride his bike to work. I thought there was a police officer assigned to walk a beat at five points. Does anyone have more information about that?

fsu813

the beat is much larger than 5 points. think it goes from 5 points all the wway down to the shoppes of avondale, if i'm not mistkane. rides in a police golf cart.

Why is JSO playing this cloak and dagger game? What ever happened to "Crime stoppers" citizen Phone numbers?
Why does JSO wan't to suppress info for several weeks while Neighbors won't be warned and on the Alert? It's pretty bad when the Goodwin crime had to be circulated around my Neighborhood as a rumor... >:(
This is hinting that they don't intend to work with the Public.

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

What we need to be discussing is more community watch programs.  At 8.30 at night in five points somebody saw something but didn't care/didn't want to be involved.  We are so caught up worrying about protecting ourselves we forget about protecting our community.

We can't rely on cops to protect us/be there at all times.  Cases of police brutality and the prison industry breeds rapists and murders. And above all, let's remember this is another case of violence against women.  As long as we promote media and advertising that depicts women as objects, women will be treated as objects.

I say this all knowing full well it could have been me, or any of my manyfriends that bike all around his area.. often times alone.  Hell I'm throwing a night bike event on Saturday.

I want to know whether the community is actually going to step up and do something.  Because I am all abou starting a network.  Let's prevent this happening not only to ourselves, but to that person down the street we never met.
