The Springfield's Personality (and a logo)

After talking to a driver of JTA Connexion this morning, he was telling me that he grew up in Springfield and went to Springfield Elementary school in the 1950s. I was completely fascinated by the stories he shared about Springfield and how it was in its glory form. This makes me fall in love with Springfield more than ever.

After that, I am inspired to design an unique logo for Springfield (perhaps if this is successful, I may do more logos for other areas in Jacksonville). As a graphic designer, one of the things I do before I get my hand dirty in making a logo is research, research, and research.

Can you share with me from your own perspective, "How can you describe the personality of Springfield?"

Great luck Josh.  It is really nice to have a local artist so involved.

I think this will open a can of worms.  Any thread with Springfield in the name just takes off.  i imagine this will be 3 pages long by days end.

I learned from the one of the bests which is you, John. I am one of your former students at UNF.

For others...

Hahaha, well that's my job to keep the sheep on the topic! :)

If you really want to design a Springfield logo, I would suggest you don't rely solely on info from an internet message board.

Go talk to SPAR, SAMBA, SHEC, Sustainable Springfield and individuals who are plugged into Springfield and its history.

That's already been one of my research sources. I want more sources, and one of the best way is to get from the perspectives like you guys here in your own words.

Which has been your source?

Right now, SPAR. I already send an email to the organization. Others are on my planned list to contact.

For others, have you expressed your perspective of the Springfield's personality?

Brenda Boydston, SPAR's Executive Director is very busy. You might want to contact her via phone or in person.

Another person you may want to talk to is Springfield's resident historian Chris Farley. She'll talk your ear off about the history of Springfield. Christina Parrish also knows a lot about Springfield's history, as do several others.

I just think you would have a far easier time getting an understanding of Springfield and its history verbally rather than in writing.

Are you looking to feature architecture or people in this logo, or both?

Another place to get lots of input for this project is the MySpringfield forum: http://www.myspringfield.org/forum/

Wow! Thanks guys! You just boosted my research further. I will definitely keep you guys posted on this project. This should be a fun little project! -rub hands-

I am looking to incorporate both. It will have to be iconic and applicable to every applications from t-shirts to vehicle wraps to signs and etc.

No research would be complete without a conversation with Rita Reagan.  She's lived here for over 20 years, is a past SPAR president (I think) and is currently working on the Springfield Heritage Education Center, which will incorporate a website that will have EVERYTHING about Springfield when it's complete.

After getting a reply email from Brenda Boydston, she is going to hook me up with Rita Reagan and Chris Farley to talk about Springfield and its history.
