Hi All,

I grew up in this area in the early sixties and I am trying to locate any photos
of the area from that time. Haven't found much on google.
Anybody have any info on this?

TIA

I am not sure if you already found this on the site http://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2008-sep-a-look-at-san-jose . It does not have historic pictures but it does give some great history.

Lake, one of those pictures features another Lakewood feature, Edwards Men's Store.

And, here are a few more I found in the State Archives as well:

Below, looking across San Jose at corner with University.  A & P Grocery is to the far left end of the shopping strip and Lakewood Pharmacy is at the curved corner in the center.  That's a Sunoco station on the southeast corner with University selling gas at 25 CENTS! :

Below, looking west on 2 lane University toward San Jose:

Below, looking east on 2 lane University from San Jose.  That's Clark's grocery on the left, famous, as I recall, for their "Clark's burgers."  It was a small local chain as I recall that eventually became a Banner affiliated store.

Here is another I found. Not sure why they don't all pop up together.  This is of the side with Winn-Dixie before it was later extended for more stores:

Holy Moly!

I actually remember some of those.

Thanks y'all...

The lot where the Winn Dixie store was built had a number of large oaks on it. There was a community uproar when the lot was paved and some of the trees came down.
Also, on the front of the lot, at the corner of University(formerly Lakewood Road) and San Jose was a gas station  (shown in a photo) which was also a Greyhound bus station. I rode the bus back and forth from FSU but can't remember if I had to change downtown or commuted straight through to Tallahassee.

Yes, I remember the Greyhound stop station.  I think that came along in the early to mid 70's after the station had closed.  The building backing up to the gas station is where I remember the Dobb's House, Dipper Dans, and American Federal Savings being at one time or another.  The remainedr of the station lot is just grass now after I think DOT took part of it to widen the turning radius from San Jose northbound to University eastbound.

Hey, MetroJax, I have a suggestion.  How about visiting locations in old pictures such as these and posting "before" and "after" shots to contrast the past with today.  I think this would be wildly popular and show people how Jax has changed, for better or for worse.  It would also help orient readers less familiar with Jax to where these locations are today.

Thanks, we have done this from time to time with downtown.  This is something we could incorporate into future articles.
