Hmmmm, maybe their closing is the reason the (24hr) BP @ Liberty & 8th has seen an uptick in nighttime activity. Very boisterous & loud lately, especially late night, early morning.

Yea...that place is crazy. Never really thought of that as Springfield though. Kinda far down 8th.

Kind of far down 8th? I don't know what area you consider to be Springfield, but 8th and Liberty IS in historic springfield. Our boundaries go to Ionia, which is another couple of blocks east.

The proprietor closed the store. Not enough business. The store is now for lease or sale.

guess selling 40's, lottos and smokes ain't all that profitable, too bad he wasn't getting a piece of the action outside the store thats where the real profits were.

Interesting considering that this store usually closed by about 9:30p. The store was fine for the occasional jug of milk but I didn't frequent it much. Along with the harmless social club were quite a few drug dealers and friends that I didn't want to have to go through to use the store.

Yeah, they started the 24 hr. thing about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I'm going to get with the SHADCO and try to nip it in the bud before it gets to out of hand.

Nip that sucker! The only thing someone needs to buy 24 hours are drugs for an illness and maybe toilet paper (if you're out of paper towel).

Speedway store is now boarded up. Maybe it's closed for a longer time ?

If the boundaries of the historic district ever do change, they will probably move north to MLK to encompass that area that was originally platted as New Springfield (I hope I got that correct). There are some great historic homes in that area as well.

Once upon a time there was a plan to include that area in the historic district.  Currently, it is an unwanted area....ignored by SPAR Council/ Springfield unless something good happens there and equally unclaimed by Metro North...who I found out at least goes to some of the public meetings about the issues that come up in that area.  Deuce is right, there are a lot of really great houses...many from the teens and twenties...in that area.  A little more like Avondale perhaps in terms of design.

Any store closing today is a sign of the times and it should worry all of us a little. Even if we didn't like the clientele it served

For a business to survive it must change as the demographics of the area changes. A good example of this is the store at 3rd and market. They saw the change and about a year or so ago started stocking a supply of good wines and imported beer.

Actually, the demographics haven't changed all that much.  Which is why there are worries on the part of a few about the newest gas/ convience store at Liberty.  It is very good that the stores add items as a smaller somewhat upscale clientel comes in, but it isn't their primary business yet.
