I knew Jax was in danger of losing the Football Tournament, but I wasn't aware that the Baseball tournament was already gone.  Is it in Jax for 2009? It will be in Boston in 2010. 2011-2013 is up for bid now.  Is Jax bidding on it?

QuoteGreenville seeks to host ACC baseball tournament

Greenville is a finalist to host the Atlantic Coast Conference's baseball championship tournament for three years beginning in 2011, City Manager Jim Bourey said today.

Bourey told GreenvilleOnline.com that the Greenville Drive baseball team made the application to host the tournament, and that City Council will consider supporting the tournament with $20,000 in hotel tax money if it comes to Greenville.

Mike deMaine, general manager for the Drive, said Greenville's proposal is "pretty far along" in the process and is one of three or four to be presented to conference officials in December.

Greenville hosted the five-day tournament from 1987 to 1995, drawing game attendance of as much as 43,000, deMaine said. In his presentation to the conference, deMaine said he's prepared to deal with the long-running controversy over the Confederate flag on Statehouse grounds, for which the NAACP has called for a boycott of college sports tournaments in the state.

An NCAA committtee voted last year to continue its moratorium on predetermined events such as the men's and women's basketball tournaments but voted not to expand the ban to merit-based events such as the early rounds in the Division I baseball and soccer tournaments or the I-AA football tournament.

The I-AA Southern Conference baseball tournament was held in South Carolina in May.

City money for a Greenville tournament would come from the city's hotel tax contingency fund to support tourism-generating events as they arise within the year.

DeMaine said his presentation will be on Dec. 18, decribing the Greenville proposal as a joint effort with the city, the Chamber of Commerce and the Greenville Convention and Visitors Bureau. Bourey said a tournament site will be announced after Christmas.

The tournament has been held for the past three years in Jacksonville, Fla., and will be held in 2010 in Boston, at Fenway Park.

Greenville??? *EYES ROLL!*

Honestly it did well in Jacksonville, Boston will follow Jacksonville so I'm not mad at that, but greenville? I think Washington DC is the better choice. Again Jacksonville did have the tournament for 3 years, so its ok that Boston gets one. ACC should be in Jax, DC, Baltimore, Boston, Philly...if it leaves Jax it should go to a MLB Ballpark not rinky dink greenville. Stop that madness!

The funny thing is there's more to do in Downtown Greenville for visitors.

And that will continue, besides the Landing what else is there to do for fans, the few clubs and bars. I am surprised we have kept the FL/Ga game as long as we have. There's no way a city like Greenvile should have more to do downtown the Jax. The Landing is to small now for major events, its way to crowded.

Jacksonville didn't lose the ACC Tournament...its rotated like the Superbowl or Final Four...I just don't like that Greenville is trying to get in on the rotation...I mean c'mon this is the same city that lost its AA team to Jackson Mississippi. Charlotte has a AAA stadium I can respect that choice, but greenville? I still say after Boston, go to Washington DC or Baltimore. Atlanta is SEC country so that wouldn't work....well then again Georgia Tech plays in Atlanta so maybe. Bringing the tourny to greenville is lame.

Yes, pretty sure Jax is among the bids seeking the tourney after 2010 in Boston. Since the football championship has also been discussed, I'll throw in the ACC basketball tourney as well. Although the sites for that one have been locked up through 2012.

The whole ACC-Boston situation was a joke. Boston basically thumbed their nose at the ACC and told them nevermind on hosting it in 2009. And they waited so long to tell anybody that Jacksonville could not host it. Bragan said if he had known a few weeks earlier than he could have hosted it.

Greenville used to host the tournament regularly (along with Durham)....but FSU and GaTech complained about the "home-field" advantage that Clemson had.

there is no way Jax can host the b-ball tournament....the arena holds less than 15,000 and the ACC is used to Greensboro, Charlotte, Tampa, DC, and Atlanta...all with over 20,000 seats.

While the Landing attracts the majority of fans for the FL/GA game, fans also hang out in other parts of the city such as the Beach.  While downtown Jax may have less for people to do than downtown Greenville, the city of Jacksonville, as a whole, offers more.

Alot more. Try getting a seat at a restaurant at the beach or on the Southside the weekend of Fla/Ga. Every place is packed.

You know ProMax after actually doing some research on the ACC teams and locations. The Best place for the Football game is Charlotte, and the Best for the Baseball Tournament is Washington DC. ACC should go for Major venues...MLB. NFL, when it comes to its Championship series. If the ACC wants fans in Jax they need Georgia Tech & Florida State to play each other ever year in Jax. That or a FSU - Miami game annual game. If Jacksonville follows behind Boston or Washington, Id be proud of that. If it followed greenville...It would suck!

The way I figured, if the arena was large enough to host the regionals of the NCAA tournament, then it could do the ACC tourney too. So I checked up on your stats, and it turns out you're pretty much right. Jax arena has a capacity of 16,000 for basketball, and since this century the ACC tournament has always been in a stadium with at least 20,000 seats for basketball. So you're probably right, Jax wouldn't ever be a candidate for that. Oh well, at least we can look forward to March Madness 2010...maybe the Gators will be a favorite that year, once the kiddies all grow up. MAYBE.

College baseball doesn't need to be in an MLB stadium...the Boston thing is special since its Fenway....but otherwise, a stadium that holds 10,000+ is just fine
