One question:  If the Jags cut Bortles now do they still have to pay him the $18,000,000?

If not, then who ever decided or made the decision to pick up the option on his contract is simply not a very smart person.

Bortles is scheduled to make $3.2 million this season in the final year of his rookie deal.

In the offseason, we chose to pick up a 5th year option for Bortles which will pay him $19 million next season.

The alternative would have been to wait out the season, and if Bortles bounced back, sticking him with a franchise tag and paying him $23 million next year.

It's a relatively low-risk move for the Jags though. If he turns out to a bust, we can cut him loose this year and not be on the hook for that $19 million. The only way that the option is guaranteed for Bortles is if he gets injured. In that case, we're on the hook for the full $19 million. And if he has a major comeback season, we've got him next year at a $4 million discount.

Man did he look bad tonight though.

The last few weeks, it's gone from "will Bortles be the QB beyond this season" to "will Bortles be the QB next week".

The team looked brutally bad last night against the Tampa starters. That Tampa offensive line is mediocre at best and Winston had all day to throw and found wide open receivers those first few drives. And the Jags offense under Bortles was dreadful. And don't get me started on Myers.

It's deja vu all over again.

It's amazing how things change (owner, GM, head coach, assistant coaches, quarterbacks, offensive lineman, pass rushers) and the results are the same.

Well, the second game of the pre-season is over and Bortles is still 3rd on MY depth chart.

Lol, what a train wreck. Cutler just put the beer, chips and cancer sticks away to get off the couch a week ago and he looked better than Bortles last night. Bortles is what he is at this point, but I'm more concerned about your offensive line holding up the entire season.

So  Fournette was talking about how much slower/easier the NFL is than what he was expecting. Evidently, because he played in the "so close to NFL caliber" SEC. He comes to that conclusion after he plays 1/2 of a preseason game with no game planning  against backups and guys who won't be on an NFL team and puts up 9-31.  Now hurt two weeks into training camp.

It gets better.

TJ Yeldon agrees with that assessment. TJ Yeldon. TJ Yeldon the RB. The same 2nd rd pick  TJ Yeldon that has dominated the slower than expected NFL to the tune of the Jags having to spend a 4th round pick on a...... RB. The same TJ Yeldon that has been on teams that are out of it in November.

Dear Jaguars:

Please elevate your play above laughingstock of NFL. Until then, please shut up.

Thank you.

Agreed. Last night, even for a sunshine pumper like me, was brutal.

But . . . Fournette didn't play and neither did Marqise. I like both to be real difference-makers on offense this year.

And . . . on defense, Dante looked to have had a good game with great pressure on Jameis. So there's that.

Do you really want to stand behind our o-line snap after snap considering their performance over the past few years? haha

Seven runs in the first half last night, averaging 0.1 yards per carry with a long run -- the longest gain of the half -- all of three freaking yards.

The Bucs D-line dominated them and harassed Blake on practically every passing play. Hard for *any* QB to have confidence or be successful in that situation.

Trying to think up a catchy slogan similar to the Colts' from several years back: "Suck for Luck"

So far, I've got: "Wins be damned, we gotta draft Sam!"  (It is difficult finding a word that rhymes with "Darnold".)

^Friday won.

Well played, sir.

I cried tears of happiness and sorrow.

I watched from section 411. Ole "Hangin" Chad Henne's passes actually looked good from way up there. A Rob should not have dropped the one  for sure.

Also I never understood what happened on the play where Jameis threw the ball up into the air (incredible mistake) and we picked it off in the end zone. He did not look down to me.

As a real football fan, I'm looking forward to FSU vs Alabama.

I can't even defend what I saw last night....

The officials ruled that Jameis' progress had stopped, and under NFL rules to protect QBs, he was ruled "down".
