QuoteBold Bean is closing its standalone bakeshop, Knead, in Murray Hill to make room for a third store of its popular coffee shop.

The closure of Knead's retail location, which has been open in Murray Hill in the storefront adjacent to Bold Bean's roastery since 2014, makes room for a third location for Bold Bean in San Marco. The Murray Hill roastery and training center will remain open after Knead closes at the end of July.

Bold Bean will open its third location, after its flagship Riverside location and its Jacksonville Beach location, at 1903 Hendricks Ave. in a 2,088-square-foot location. The Downtown location at EverBank Center is, meanwhile, "on hold."

"Business is always evolving," Bold Bean's Jay Burnett said in a news release. "This is just another exciting step in our company's evolution."

Fans and patrons of Knead don't need to fret about the future of the baking brand. The rebranded Knead Kitchen will have an expanded focus on supplying its signature pastries, sandwiches and specialty items like its tomato pies in Bold Bean's three locations.

Adam Burnett, who has served as manager of Knead Bakeshop will move to the role of chief baker and operations manager, and will also "steer the company's craft beer and expanding wine programs."

"With the opening of new Bold Bean Coffee locations, closing Knead's stand-alone cafe will allow us to increase our overall production and expand our food offerings at all our Bold Bean Coffee locations," Burnett said. "And we'll be able to better focus on new product and menu development needed to meet growing demand at those locations for our wholesale accounts, catering and planned online sales."

The company plans to open a San Marco location in late summer or early fall.

Interesting. Although I am upset there downtown plans are scrapped for the moment.

I don't understand what exactly is happening to the Knead shop. Its closing down to the public, but remaining active for baking/distribution??

correct.  the space is going to be used as a central production space.

Its a sound business decision until there is a lot more demand and branding for the products.  Cafes are expensive and rife with management needs that a bakery simply doesn't have to deal with.

Thanks, Stephen. And that makes sense. I've only been to the shop a handful of times, but I always thought it was rather large for what it was.

Knead is an amazing place, so I am disappointed at losing it. However I do currently reside in San Marco so I could not get there as often as I would have liked. Please continue to have the superior baguettes available.  All of the food at Knead was excellent, by the way.

Have you looked at the vacant corner space at the new Haydon Burns/DuPont Center?  It would be pretty limited but potentially a huge addition to the Center and Downtown.

So bummed this is happening. I am able to walk to Knead and do so almost every weekend. I love the italian sandwich they serve there. Will something like that be available anymore?
