This is a surprise? When did you last see cops patroling this incredibly busy commercial area?

I see cops patrolling Riverside almost DAILY..all via golf cart.

Really???

Riverside/Avondale has two "Walking Beat" officers assigned during the daytime Monday-Saturday.  They don't actually walk it just means that they do no answer calls outside the District.  One rides in the golf cart and one in a regular patrol car.  Sometimes they ride together in the golf cart.  The assignment is usually given to officers who are in the last four or five years before retirement and who have demonstrated an outstanding ability to interact with the public.  It's also sort of an "atta-boy" reward; a recognition by their superiors that they are recognized as having been way above average in their careers.

We have had some really outstanding officers in this position in the last ten years or so.  They attend all of the merchant's association meetings, all of the SHADCO meetings and go out of their way to make sure they meet all of the business owners and give them their direct cellphone numbers.  It's a great example of community policing at its best.

We have in the past couple of months lost two of the very best to retirement,  T.C. Edwards and Mike Duckworth.  Their replacements are going to have some very big shoes to fill.  Officer Duckworth was the officer who put in months of overtime and extra effort to arrest the graffiti gang that was doing so much damage.

Very interesting. I lived in Riverside for over 12 years and never saw a cop in a golf cart - but I moved away in 2007 and maybe it has become a more common sight?

I see them at two or three times a week while I'm out on my mail route. I also see a couple of bike cops every once in a while.

AKIRA

To answer and earlier question, Riverside/Avondale, downtown and San Marco have police on golf carts.  All the inner core areas except Springfield (which has no active commercial center).

SPR's businesses are sprinkled about, not clustered, so not viable to patrol via golf cart. He's correct.

Well, in the spirit of effective community safety, patrol and placement,we certainly should no longer refer to "Golf" cart. "Patrol" cart?
"LEO" cart? "Assured Safety" cart? And what about "cart"? Change that too.

I don't know that I've ever seen the police on golf carts in San Marco. I remember I used to see them downtown but not regularly.

Most relaxed arm robbery in history no doubt.  One girl was still deciding on her order during it...

RAP will be holding CCW licensing classes at Buckman House next week, following their strategic plan to ensure neighborhood safety.

Another way to imagine Proceedings:

RAP Block Captains issue terse directive;
Keep vigilant watch for suspicious, out of place person(s) that match description of Bad Guy.
When overwhelmed, retreat to RAP Avondale Core Habitat. If one must venture away from residence and end up at the Shoppes,MoJo's apparently an example the Bad Guys avoid (at least during normal operating hours ;) ),particularly the Dudes at the bar talkin' guns, and the folk at outside seating, their back to the wall, carefully watching entrance.Red Meat & Whiskey.
Please answer attached Poll regards feelings about the name "Shoppes" Of Avondale, and three questions on or about Safety Carts.
