They have no on campus stadium and the identity that comes with it (one of the few things the Orange Bowl still had going for it.)

They lack the funding to keep elite coaches/assistants.

They have the worst fan support of any major FBS program. They can't draw more than 40,000 fans unless UF/FSU bring another 20-30,000 fans in tow

Univ of Central Florida has Bright House Networks Stadium, which seats about 45,000 down there in Orlando. IMO a smaller stadium like that would be perfect for the Canes. It's kinda embarrassing that freaking UCF beat Miami to the punch, with a suitable stadium. All I hear in the state of Florida is 'the big three' universities, and UCF certainly isn't included with that bunch. The South Florida region arguably has best recruiting in the US. Maybe the fact that Miami has a private university is what kinda hold them back with certain aspects (funding etc). Here's UFC's Stadium below.

http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Bright_House_Networks_Stadium

UCF was able to build new stadium and other athletic facilities largely because of charging students some of the highest athletics fees in the county. Not to mention UCF has over 50,000 students vs 8,000 undergrads at UM.

If the roles were reversed than at some point UM would've either built a stadium on/near campus or bought the Orange Bowl outright like USC bought the LA Coliseum. Miami can't even find the funding ($10-$15 million) to build an indoor practice facility.

From a recruiting standpoint, many players are more impressed by playing in an NFL stadium than an on-campus one....thats the edge schools like USF and PITT try to sell....unfortunately for Miami, Joe Robbie Stadium is just plain boring.

^lol, maybe to tufsu1.  I'm sure the Jimmy Grahams and Duke Johnsons of college football view it as a stepping stone to a successful NFL career.  I'll admit, Miami is a bandwagon city.  If they continue to win, that stadium will fill up just like American Airlines Arena did when  Lebron came to town.

If Olsen isn't good enough to beat out Williams next year, Miami is in trouble for a couple seasons. Lake, you earlier said Miami's defense is young, but they really aren't. The two deep on the Dline is all juniors and seniors, with juniors and seniors at LB. The secondary mostly returns though and will be much better. Miami also loses a lot of key olineman, their best or 2nd best WR (Hurns), and I'd imagine their best defensive player Perryman will go pro. Skill position recruiting has gotten better at Miami, but still lacking on the lines and at LB. I think they may take a small step back next season, but who knows what happens between now and then.

True story...Miami's average attendance during their last national championship season in 2001 was....wait for it....drumroll...47,161 and that was in the Orange Bowl. It was also before Miami started hilariously over inflating average attendance.

Miami is certainly improving from where the bottom fell out a few years ago. However, the ceiling for Miami is nowhere near where it was in the 80s or 90s.

They have no on campus stadium and the identity that comes with it (one of the few things the Orange Bowl still had going for it.)

I'm fine with Golden. He's every bit as good as what FSU has. The best thing UM has is tradition, a pretty exciting city to go to school in and a built in pool of local talent coming out of high school.  Those will always be pretty strong draws.

I think Golden is a good coach as well. However, Miami doesn't have the funds to keep him if he keeps winning. The Southern Cal job will be open in a month. Texas, Florida, and Nebraska might be looking for a new coach as well. Golden will be on the list of possibilities for some of those schools. All of them can pay him well above what Miami can.

Not to mention salaries for assistant coaches keep going up.

It's a pretty small school in a major city that's not a one horse town built around a large college campus. Enrollment (around 10k) is closer to FAMU's than UF/FSU.  Even UNF is larger.

It is one reason Miami has a terrible fan base. But the point remains the Canes have never been a draw. To address your later post about Miami being a bandwagon city

The only year Miami had any kind of meaningful bump in attendance was 2002. A year they UF & FSU played in the Orange Bowl.

^Yes, they've never had a large sustained following and never will.  It's a pretty small school when compared to the FSUs and UFs of the world. It's just located in an area ripe with local talent coming out of high schools, which allows it to compete on their level on the football field.

Looks like FSU controls its own destiny now.

Have to win at UF and in the ACCG and we're in Pasadena.

Any Gator fans want to sell their tickets to me? If so PM me.

So until the bandwagon gets rolling FSU fans don't line up tickets to games... I see

No matter how bad we are I would never duck going to a home game.

In all kinds of weather we all stick together for FLORIDA.

And I never sell tickets to opposing fans...

Actually FSU fans have been buying up extra tickets to the UF game for a few weeks now and I have been looking around, but thought I'd ask here also. I'm not going to pay $100 from StubHub when I know they will drop in price.

Congrats to you for not selling your tickets.
