Dang.  I guess this isn't the same team assembled for World Cup qualifying?

Late goal ends U.S. Olympic hopes

QuoteJaime Alas scored in stoppage time and El Salvador ousted the United States from Olympic qualifying Monday night with a 3-3 tie.

http://espn.go.com/olympics/story/_/id/7741539/late-el-salvador-goal-ends-united-state-olympic-hopes

By the way, Nashville had a crowd of less than 8,000.

Nope. Different team. Olympics is the Under 23 team. Only player that played tonight that we might see in Jax is Brek Shea.

Don't forget Freddy Adu. Hard to believe he is on the U-23 team since it seems like ages ago that he signed that deal with the MLS.

The city did a pretty poor job of putting too many events into one weekend.

holy crap...now we're complaining that there are too many events downtown...really?

Gift horse meet mouth
Sorry, wasn't clear enough.  It would be great if the city were able to attract events to the other 51 weekends a year.  4 major events on one weekend is great, but would be even better to spread them out a bit.  I'd rather fill my hotel 4 times than once.

USA-Scotland breaks attendance record for soccer match in Jax

QuoteJACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The upcoming men's soccer match between the United States and Scotland has broken an attendance record for a soccer match in Jacksonville.
Over 20,000 tickets have been sold for the U.S. Men's National Team game versus Scotland next month.
The previous Jacksonville soccer attendance record of 18,088 was set on August 11, 1981 when the Jacksonville Tea Men played against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the first year of the North American Soccer League.
The United States and Scotland will play at EverBank Field on May 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available starting at $22.

Amazing! I can't wait to see how many they finally end up selling. Can you imagine how great it would be if it was USA v Mexico or maybe against a top soccer nation?

I'd love to see Jax get a USL Pro or NASL team. I think it could really work.

^I totally agree. Regular MNT hosting and pro soccer are one of my "attainable dreams" for the city's sports scene, up there with making UNF and JU sports a community draw, AAA baseball, and bringing back hockey.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

In regards to the NASL, I wonder if already having two teams in Florida would help or hurt us.

Did the game back in 1999 or 2000 not draw 20k?

Hard to say, especially considering that the other two NASL teams don't do very well. USL Pro's Orlando team kicks their behinds in attendance, even though they're supposedly on a lower "tier" than the NASL. Hell, if the attendance figures for FC Jax Destroyers are correct, even they're already pretty comparable to the NASL teams - and those boys don't get paid.

I'd imagine our likeliest route would be USL Pro, considering we already have the USL PDL team that seems to be doing pretty well so far. I'd expect it would be even more likely if Orlando ends up getting the MLS franchise they're gunning for.

It drew about 17,000, according to Wikipedia.

The hardest part for me watching the new Rowdies down in Tampa is I remember the first ones. My grandfather used to have season tickets back in the day when they were drawing 20k+ at the old Tampa Stadium in the early 80's. That was in the old NASL. Definitely not the same.

I was a big Tea Men fan when I was in primary school. I remember when Dennis Witt and Ringo Cantillo came to my school (Merrill Road Elementary School) and talked to us about soccer. A few weeks later I saw Dennis Witt when I was coming out of Showbiz Pizza and I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought it was a big deal celebrity sighting!

The Tea Men were never really that great, but I loved going to the games. I was gutted when they finally folded (after that ridiculous season of 'indoor soccer' - what an abomination).

Keep in mind that we're at 20,000+ now; we're still almost 2 months out & they've yet to advertise much (if at all).
