Just my 2 cents Tim, But I believe a lot of those people live on the south side of the river..and could give a Riverside Rats Ass about anything that happens on the "Other Bank".
Starting from the edge of Riverside to the Northside they think this side is scum.
I don't think any city council members (or other above the law makers) have been in Springfield for the last 13 years.
they look once and that is enough for a permanent opinion.

John P

at least three council members have toured springfield since the last election. the neighborhood is well connected for such a small spot.

I think your two cents may be spot on !  :)

Look at the waste of resources that Council Member Schellenberg is creating with his Don Quixote style fight against mothballing. And according to himself, he couldn't even tell Main Street from 8th Street in Springfield. There are a lot of sub urban districts who just don't get it. Would be best for them to just leave Springfield (and the urban core) alone.

^^ would be best for folks like him to not even represent in council. Can we fire him? :P

QuoteWhy does the city WANT these places destroyed? Who the hell is in a position of power that wants to find monies to level buildings that are clearly not posing any danger?

In a time where this money could be used to employ people who need jobs , they are mowing down buildings.  STUPID.

Remember all those people who said "I'm with Alvin", ask one of them. They should know why there is no money from HUD to reuse the buildings for the people who need them. Go to the top, ask the mayor, but be ready for the HAND.
And, that $115 will save Jacksonville from financial ruin. - Mayor John Peyton

"This is a game-changer. This is what I mean when I say taking Jacksonville to the next level."
-Mayor Alvin Brown on new video boards at Everbank Field

I suppose the demolitions would have stopped if Mike Hogan was elected mayor.    ::)

Debbie Thompson

Considering that Mike Hogan made it clear he didn't care about the urban core, I highly doubt it.  What was it he said?  I don't care about downtown, I'm one of YOU?  Something along those lines, anyway.

Tacachale

^I believe his line was "he stands with us", which was included in his ad that blasted Alvin Brown for wanting to "spend even more downtown". IIRC the ad implied that all downtown projects were the Courthouse and the Skyway.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Debbie Thompson

Oh, yeah, that sounds right. And I'm sorry I hijacked the thread.  We were talking about funding for demolitions in Springfield, which I abhor.

The mayor doesn't have anything to do with HUD money - that's federal money.  Some comes straight from the feds other of it gets filtered through state programs.  The mayor doesn't dictate how HUD money is spent in Jax though.  And even if s/he did, Hogan certainly wouldn't have been spending it in a way to benefit the urban core.

I agree with Debbie, back to code enforcement - whom I witnessed harrassing the second recipient of a Make it Happen project this morning.  We will go down there later today and see what they were harrassing Kenny about.

I will also say that I have had a number of people tell me latley that Riverside can't seem to find a code officer anywhere.  When they call in complaints over there, they can't get code out there!  They are all fixated on Springfield and IMO, its because its easy pickins with low income people and old buildings.  I had some one tell me they were seated once next to a table of code enforcemnt officers who were discussing the pool they had going on to see who get dish out the most citations.  That is a problem.

Code enforcement works strictly off of the City Line complaints, not their own initiative.  If a certain section of Springfield is getting targeted then there is someone filing a lot of complaints.
