Store closings

Blockbuster was one of 11 companies named last year , as "in trouble"  so this is no shock.  Red box and Netflix  have pretty much made Blockbuster "obsolete"  why would someone go to their store and pay 4 bucks for a movie, when they can get the same one for $1.00 at Red box , or for that matter on-demand?.  Still as I said, another business folds.  More unemployed.  sign of the times .

The AJ Wright stores are gonna be closing too, like the ones on Normandy Blvd, and Dunn Ave. Many of the AJ Wright's (nationwide) will close down with nothing taking their place, but some of AJ Wright's (owned by TJX Cos.) will turn into either Marshalls, TJ Maxx, or Home Goods. Hopefully Jax can atleast get a coupla new TJ Maxx's, although the chances are not good.

I think most Blockbusters are closing, going to free-standing vending machines.

Interestingly, I just found out the other day that Blockbuster the video-rental company has no relation to the vending machines, beyond the fact that the vending machine company is licensing the Blockbuster name. So the success of those Blockbuster machines actually means bad news for Blockbuster as a company (unless they plan to thrive solely on licensing their name).

^^If you can't beat them, rent them your name.

I think the day for "video stores" like Blockbuster are soon nearing end.   The vending machine Video Rentals at Walgreen's and Mc Donald's  cost so much less rental space, employees, etc. Its a no-brainer.   On-demand, now available to nearly everyone is also sealing their doom.

Blockbuster Stores were on the way out any way. Corporate might as well get some money from the name.

I have very little sympathy for Blockbuster itself, as their predatory tactics over the years have killed more than their fair share of local video stores, but it does sadden me to see the days of the neighborhood video store coming to an end. I actually really like my local Blockbuster. The same staff has been in there forever, they remember your name, make informed suggestions, etc. It's kind of nice to be able to walk into a video store and browse as well. Redbox and Netflix are great for the consumer, but I have mixed feelings about an entire industry employing tens of thousands of people being replaced by a mechanical box or Comcast remote.

I don't like that their entire workforce will be unemployed, but Blockbuster as a company exercised such poor business management that I think they "deserve" to go away. Between apparently making all their money on late fees, plus not allowing young adults to use debit or check cards to start an account, then transforming to a largely "new movie" rental place, then dumping money into Blockbuster Music...

Somehow it is very ironic that a Netflix ad appears at the top of this page of discussion about Blockbusters.

Very ironic.  Sign of the times I guess :)

We had a local Blockbuster like that and they closed it 2 years ago!

The Times Grill locations on Baymeadows and Beach/Hodges appear to have closed. The Baymeadows location has a "closed for renovation" sign on it and their phone has been disconnected. So..

This is also the case @ the Fleming Island location....

and the normandy times grill as well. on a side note though, the recently closed A.J. Wright on Normandy next to the times grill is being converted into a Marshall's.
