That sounds about right, the beach is a younger and shall we say "less discriminating" crowd whereas Downtown is a slightly older somewhat more mature group.

I have not been to Jax in a while & people are always talking about a red light entertainment area, my friends in Jax say they been going to Jax Beach on weekends to club hop....which had me curious. I did not see any mention of it here.

Visiting MetroJax or City data is the way I visit Jax....I read & ask questions.

I would say the only reason there is a 'better' situation at the beach is the access.  The trolley, multiple garages geared towards the bar-goers and the walkability of the area make it a better destination than downtown.  The quality of of the venues, the people, and the atmosphere are all better downtown.

The beach has some good bars, clubs & restaurants... but the crowds are insane. Some people like being packed into a bar like a sardine. Go to Lynches after 9pm and try to make it to the bathroom without pissing yourself... and forget about the Ritz... you'll spend an hour waiting in line at the door just to get in.
And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

Also 31 miles from my house to the beach, better have a designator driver.

Yeah if you live on the SS and at the Beaches.

People from DT can't park in the garages? News to me.

If you seriously drive from DT or Avondale to go out at the beaches, something's wrong with you.  You might prefer to go to Leopard Lounge or Rain, they're closer.  The beach has nothing that DT or Riverside doesn't have.  The only reason to go out to the beach, at night, is to hit on 18 year olds, which is what TSI is for.  Riding around on a beach cruiser during the day is a different story.

Well, besides the obvious: the beach has... the beach. Who doesn't love a moonlight stroll on the beach?

My wife goes to both the Bay street strip downtown and to the beach, depending on her mood. We live probably 2 minutes from downtown (assuming the Hart bridge is open). Nothing's really "wrong" with her.

Plus, aside from the immaturity of the crowd, the beach has a more walkable area. Well-lit, police presence, etc. All downtown really has is the strip on Bay st, and the Landing. Then blocks and blocks of darkened buildings and sidewalks.

There are plenty of reasons to head out to the beach for bar hopping...even if you live downtown... especially if you like live music. There's much much more of a scene for live music out at the beaches... from cover bands to national acts.

The Freebird is a great venue... one of the best in town. The festivals in the spring & summer are great for getting your night started. Anytime I'm out there for either of those I'll end up walking the strip popping in & out of reasonably crowded places.

I'm just trying to stir the pot a bit. I go out at the beaches probably twice a month during the summer.  I just don't think it's anything special other than the beach itself.  i enjoy going to Lemon bar during the day.  I like Fionn McCools, but it's standing room only most of the time.  I hate the Ritz and Lynch's.  I've heard that Fly's Tie is fun.  I'm just not into the whole crammed next to people, most of whom are 18, just so that you can 'be seen' or what not.

I'll continue to go out there every so often, but I believe that downtown is and will be a much better area.

Coming from someone who spends the majority of my time in the core and the surrounding urban neighborhoods, the beach nightlife scene is much more vibrant(but less diverse and a less mature crowd) than the nightlife in the core.

I always recommend that if you live in Jacksonville in your 20's, you really should spend at least a year living at the beach.  Your Jax experience wouldn't be complete without living on the other side of the ditch, IMO.
