How fast is too fast for the left lane?  Just wondering...

No specific number really, it just depends on conditions and traffic flow.

If I find that traffic is going faster than I am, then I pull into the right lanes rather than watching with gleeful enjoyment as 100 cars pile up behind me in the left lane. If I am going faster than the car in front of me, they should do the polite (and legal) thing and move right to let faster traffic pass.

This particular aspect of driving is a study in human psychology, there is this little sub-set of controlling people who seem to think it's their job to determine how fast everyone else goes by slothing along in the fast lanes and not letting people pass. You know the ones I'm talking about, the douches in minivans who go 5 under the limit and when you finally get sick of being stuck behind them, they floor it to close the gap so you can't get around them.

If they want to go slow, fine. Nobody cares. Just move over and let others by.

Conversely, I wish that people will stop riding people's bumpers in the right lane.  Fast people belong in the left lane and slow people belong in the right lane.

I agree with you.

I always move left to pass and move right to let others pass me if they're going faster. I don't tailgate.

I wish people would respect the left vs. right lane behaviors thing generally. Highway driving would be more pleasant.

I'm 10th out of a line of 11 in the left lane and the guy behind me tailgates or screams at me.  I swear most people don't look beyond the car immediately in front of them.

Also, If I'm doing 75-80 in a 65 and walking the cars in the right lane, don't expect me to slow down behind truly pokey traffic for you.  I see you; and trust me, I'll get our of your way as soon as I won't have to slow down ridiculously to do it.

One of my biggest pet peeves... and I do not think it has been mentioned...

Driving with emergency flashers on while it is raining. ::)  Why?  Why oh why are you doing this??
Are you telling everyone around you that YOU are the road hazard?
Are you warning us that precipitation is falling?
Is this a Florida thing?  I cannot say I have ever seen it elsewhere...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

I agree with you about the overly aggressive drivers who think that the left lane is their private Autobahn.  Yes, the slow pokes should clear the lane, but it is still no excuse to go tearing down the road at 90+ miles per hour.  That is potentially dangerous on many levels.

I love the reporters too, they have backhandedly changed the language for the worse:

"WE HAVE AN ACCIDENT WORKING..."   WTF? I've seen thousands of accidents, but I've NEVER seen one working!

"A RAILROAD TANKER JUMPED THE TRACK..." Uh? Tankers are ships, tank cars are part of a train.

"A FLATBED TRAIN CAR..."  Okay, flatbeds are on cars alright try, and PICKUP TRUCKS, and Semi's, railroads on the other hand have Flatcars.

"On I-275 in Tampa Bay..."  REALLY? I want to see this, a freeway IN the bay?

Then there are the incredible's.

"She was truly a HEro..."   Sorry guys, not unless SHE had a sex change.

and my all time favorite...

"He was a CO-Conspirator in the Auto Theft ring...." So he is the party scheming to the party scheming? It sounds like a double negative to me, there is NO SUCH THING as a co-conspirator.

Refusal to use a turn signal.
Waiting until you have come to almost a complete stop to use the turn signal.  It's turn signal THEN brakes people!!!
Rubberneckers, especially when the accident is on the other fricking side of the highway!
People who don't understand the Five Points intersection.
Tailgaiters
A$$holes who decide to merge into the far right lane on southbound 95 at the Fuller Warren right as Park Street folks are trying to get on the highway.  I really am surprised that there aren't more accidents there.
American flag/eagle plastered vehicles.  I'm all for being patriotic, but don't you think that covering your entire rearview mirror with the flag cheapens it just a little?
Hate-filled ignoramus bumper stickers.

I'm sure there are more, but those are my biggest peeves.

Refusing to yield to faster traffic in the left lane in most states is punishable by fine. Jeb Bush vetoed the effort to make the same here, and recent attempts die in committee.

Plain and simple, drive slower than the car behind you? Are you an on duty cop? No, move over. You cannot stop someone for speeding yourself.

And for the record, I have used right lanes to pass, and have even passed people using the emergency lane, that decided that going 40 in a 60 while talking with each other was safe and responsible. (not that mine was any better, but still)

But I will say this, after driving in Ireland and Northern Ireland, US drivers are freaking idiots.
Inside lane is the fast lane, seems everyone in Ireland knows so.
If on a 2 lane country road and you are going below the speed limit, you will be passed.
Those afraid to yield versus stop, good luck with roundabouts. You will get run over.
And you should see the country roads where the speed limit is 60MPH in Northern Ireland. They would be lucky to have a 35MPH speed in the States.

Agreed.  I just hope that those people who drive 90+ miles per hour in the left lane know how to react if they have a tire blowout or other emergency.  If not, then their bodies and wreckage will be blocking traffic...

Another pet peeve?  People who drive in other people's blind spots.

It kind of depends on your perspective here.

I have one vehicle (an SUV) that I don't go that fast in. It isn't equipped to handle speeds. But I have another vehicle for which 90 is like you're standing still. The tires on that one are tested/rated to 200+ mph, and the brake discs are larger than the actual wheels on most cars. Just because someone's crappy minivan starts falling apart and can't manuever without a mile of clear distance in every direction once it gets over 70 doesn't mean that problem carries over to every other vehicle on the road.

But what's this got to do with some idiot going 60mph in the fast lane on I-95, refusing to move over for faster traffic, and flooring it so people can't get around him? I have news for you, controlling what speed everybody else goes isn't your job. Either move with the flow of traffic or move the @#$% over. End of story.

I'm not trying to start an argument , however if you are in the right lane, going the posted speed limit, and other drivers come up behind you , flashing their lights, and waiving etc..(except for emergency vehicles)  would you say then, that the driver should keep up with the flow of traffic??

To me , it seems the speed limit could be 120 mph and there will be at least 10% of the traffic that wants to go 140 just because.

You just helped me to make my point.  If someone wants to be a speed demon, they had better be able to properly maneuver their vehicle down the fast lane.  How many times have people lost control of their cars and gotten into wrecks because they think that they are the next Tony Stewart?  I don't mind the left lane being used for fast drivers, but I take issue with those who witlessly put their lives and other lives at risk because they think that they can push the pedal to the medal without the proper skills to drive fast.  Besides, if you are going 90+ miles per hour in the left lane and you still find yourself on other drivers' bumpers, perhaps you're compensating for something that a car cannot help...  Wow, we prove that we are the coolest vehicle on the road, but is it worth risking life and limb?  Yes, the law enforcement officers' job is to ticket those maniacs and it is solely their job only...  My point is that we should eventually take responsibility for our driving habits since our actions will ultimately affect others.  After all, a lot of these speed freaks are going to be inexperienced drivers, drunk drivers or, like you said - people trying to rev up their 1988 Plymouth Voyager minivan...  And, NO, not every driver is responsible.  That is why I-95 is a dangerous stretch of highway.  Don't expect me to tell you how to drive, but I certainly am not living under the illusions that everybody is like you on the road.  If everyone drove like you, perhaps we would not have so many injuries and fatalities on the highways.

P.S. - Don't put words into my mouth.   You don't know me well enough to assume that I think it's great for slowpokes to take up residence in the left lane.  I never said that and never will.  You're picking the wrong argument if you think that I do...   Try to pick a real fight with someone who actually does drive 60 miles per hour in the left lane...END OF STORY!
