First Guaranty Bank ATM Robbery on King St. Saturday, 4/10

Just a heads up and in case you were wondering what the ten cop cars and police helicopter with spotlight was all about on Saturday - a man was robbed at gunpoint (Saturday night, 4/10) around 10 p.m. at the streetside/walk-up ATM at First Guaranty Bank on King Street. Apparently, a black male in his late teens with three accomplices snuck up and demanded the victims money. JSO caught two of the accomplices, but the armed robber is MIA. >:(

Be careful!

This is why my retired police friend won't go to an ATM after dark. He says anywhere in town not just downtown, Springfield, etc.

Riverrat

Absolutely. It's just a shame when you feel safe in your own neighborhood, especially one as quaint and comfortable as Riverside.

While wise to avoid ATM's after dark, I think First Guaranty should do more to light the front of the building where the ATM sits. Driving by last night, I noticed a bright light over the ATM, but the building itself on each side of it sits pretty dark.

If you must get money on King Street, go into Kickbacks, Wallgreens or Park Place for their ATM. Its worth the trip in most cases. Someone at the ATM is an invitation for something bad to happen, sadly.

You can light the building all day and night and it won't stop them; especially at night.  They can lurk across the street or somewhere else and "wait it out" until the right person comes up.  Smartness is the key.  Always be aware of your surroundings, and/or, don't go to walk-ups at night.  If you do, try and keep a "third eye peeled" for people coming your way, walking up, or appearing out of no where when you are at the ATM.  I would never use a walk up at night unless I'm carless or just don't have no other alternative; otherwise, I will use a drive through, in which I can screech away or run them over if they try and rob me.

I thought it was common sense to avoid ATM'S that are outside during the night. Obviously I thought wrong, and this guy paid the price. If you are going to an ATM like that, make sure it is with a group, and not alone.

From what I was told they guy wasn't alone. He was with another guy...sucks when TWO men aren't safe. Apparently safety doesn't come in numbers anymore.

I do think better lighting would help discourage robbery if noticeable surveillance and bright lighting were installed (despite my “thought” of this, it’s actually proven knowledge).

Final thoughts…if ATM’s are so damn unsafe at night, they need to have “dawn to dusk” hours!

I wasn't going to reply, but SportMotor made me remember having an armed friend cover my back more than one time when I did an ATM withdrawl at night. this is when Handguns and their trained owners are Golden!   You watch my back
I watch yours.

Yay, getting shot by paranoid money withdrawers, just another reason to avoid ATMs at night!

Hey JC if you see someone withdrawing money at night, dont walk up on them ;)

Getting held up at the ATM isn't the only way to get ripped off. Card skimming devices are something to be aware of.

A false card slot is placed over the original card slot. The false slot holds an additional card reader used to copy card information.

I try my hardest not go to the ATM after dark, however when I do (last night for example) I never really turn my back. When I get out my car I take a look around, insert my card, then turn back around, input my number, turn back around until the cash comes out. It sounds crazy but that robbery on King street is a prime example why you shouldnt have your back turned. Not saying that it couldnt happen even if you are being extra careful, but it could help;
