No Mayport carrier until 2019

Navy budgeting plans don't call for a carrier to be home-ported in Mayport Naval Station until 2019, a date about five years later than had been hoped when Jacksonville politicians began fighting for the ship but consistent with the most recent discussions.

Virginia Rep. Glenn Nye, D-Norfolk, who visited Mayport on Monday, said the delay is the result of Old Dominion politicians pulling out all the stops to prevent a carrier being moved from Norfolk Naval Station to Florida.

But Rep. Ander Crewnshaw, R-Fla., derided Nye's statements as political grandstanding by a freshman congressman for whom the carrier issue is seen as a political powder keg.

"He's saying things that will help him get elected," Crewnshaw said. "Sometimes he tells the truth. Sometimes he makes it up."

The schedule remains as it has for months, Crenshaw said, with the worst-case scenario being a ship not arriving until 2019.
