I hope they do this at Christmas

I love Christmas.

I love Christmas too. A little bird just told me that Macy's and Santa Claus are both coming to the Avenues Mall this Christmas.

I'll believe it when I see it!  Most Macy's are not that special these days...but it could be an upgrade from what we have in terms of dept. stores.  I think a Saks and Nordstrom need to go into STJC.

That's  just what the Avenues Mall needs to get people from Ponte Vedra, and  Jacksonville Beach to visit again.

If this does prove true and come to fruition, hopefully it is along the lines of the Mall at Millenia Macy's.

The Avenues Mall is more central than the SJTC and would be a better location for Macys if it does become a reality. I love the SJTC but getting there from SJC is a pain.

I think SJTC is closer for the Jacksonville  crowd.
I never thought about the South of Jacksonville folks.

Good point.

There are about 850 Macy's in 45 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam, with 760 of those full line and the rest clearance or limited line stores.  There are 61 Macy's in Florida plus 5 of their sister company, Bloomingdales.  The two together employ 11,800 Floridians.  Nationwide, in 2009, they opened 5 stores and closed 5 stores.  They had 4 "reopens", replacements, or relocations.

It looks like an average Macy's employs 200 to 300 people and pushes about 200,000 square feet.  The closest stores to us are Macy's in Tallahassee, Ocala, Gainesville, Atlamonte Springs, Orlando, Daytona, Melbourne, and Savannah.  We are surrounded.

It certainly seems inevitable they would come here as we have to be one of the largest cities without one.  I would guess if the economy hadn't crashed, they would already be here.  If they come, someone is probably giving them a sweetheart deal on the lease/purchase (they own over half their stores).

A little bird told me so.  (Under the condition of confidentiality)

Not that I'm truely discounting your source, but talk is cheap these days.  I'll believe it when I see it; and when it is official, I expect you to tell me, "I told you so..."

The old Parisian/Belk spot seems small for Macy's...well, any good Macy's.  So if you're right and it does go to the Avenues, I hope they expand the space.  I was hoping they'd take that space and do to it what they did to the vacant anchor spot at the Florida Mall in Orlando when they added H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 (3 stores that in my opinion, would probably do very well here in J-ville).

Forever 21 was supposed to be the anchor for Avenues Walk.  However, I assume that project must be stalled.

I agree with you Duke, believe it when I see it.  These rumors have made the rounds in this town for at least 30 years!  Oh, yeah, we are also supposed to get a Neiman Marcus any day now!  :D

Of course, maybe one day someone will get it right just by luck.  BS Co. may get lucky.  We shall see.  If not, we will be talking about "bird brains", not little birdies!  ;D

I can tell you that if someone plans to open a store by Christmas, even in an existing shell, they better announce soon because I don't see how they build out/remodel the space in less than 6 to 8 months (not sure even that is doable given the size of the store) to make Thanksgiving's Black Friday.

Conventional wisdom says if and when these stores come, they go to SJTC.  It's doing better, more upscale, and they specifically held land back just for these branded stores.

Damn...thought they were coming downtown!  (wishful thinking)
