QuoteThe nation’s largest private operator of health facilities plans to build a 150-bed acute-care hospital on Jacksonville’s West side.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America has submitted a letter of intent for certificate of need to the state Agency for Health Care Administration.

HCA, which locally operates Memorial Hospital and Orange Park Medical, said its own preliminary assessment concluded that there is not sufficient access to acute care in the area.

The company did not disclose a specific location for the proposed facility, offering only that it would be in West Jacksonville, south of Interstate 10 and approximately 10 miles from an existing provider.

The 143-bed Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital, located southeast of Downtown on University Boulevard, is the city’s only acute-care hospital. The non-profit hospital serves children and adults with brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and other conditions.

HCA said growth estimates indicate that the area’s population will increase in coming years, and a new major connecting road will increase access.

“The service area is expected to grow 25.6 percent over the next five years in the 65 and older population,” the company said in a statement. “These projections indicate that there is a sufficient base of patients in West Jacksonville to support a new hospital of 70 to 85 beds.”

Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Linda Mosely said the request for 150 beds would account for future growth, and a location has not yet been decided.

...and Brooks itself just added a new wing.  I can't help but feel sad. Acute health conditions such as spinal cord & traumatic brain injury are not where I'd like to see growth. :'(

Says approx 10 miles from an existing.

Oakleaf/Argyle area is about 10 miles from OPMC. (although the yet to be built St Vincents @ Brannan Field/Old Jennings will be 6 miles).

And St Vincents to 103rd/Normandy area is 10 miles.

jandar

Looks like I was right on my hunch.

Article states it will be built in the 32221 zip code. This is Normandy/Herlong area.
Oakleaf Town Center is zipcode 32222.

Jason

Good news for Normandy/Herlong.  I'm interested to see where the proposed site is.

Acute care covers everything but long-term nursing care and rehabilitation so it's not just for brain and spinal cord injuries.

^^True, and with an aging population more and more of us will need varying levels of care that regular hospitals are not equipped to handle.  Is "acute care" what is sometimes referred to as a "skilled nursing facility?"

Dog Walker

No,  acute care is something you need "right now".  Something for which you are expected to recover fairly quickly.  Think intensive care, post-surgical care, heart attack, spike a 105 degree fever, break a leg.  Definitely not "skilled nursing facility" or rehabilitation.  It's where you go when the emergency room has done what they can for you or where you go after surgery.

There will be an emergency room and an operating room associated with this one.

 >:(I say no more hospitals until we get this Health Care problem in check!

Charles Hunter

I guess we'll never have any more hospitals then - ever.

No, we'll get more hospitals, but they will start out as 150 bed facilities that will add more as needed.

I guess I should've quoted 1962's comment, that's what I was referring to.  No matter what happens in Congress regarding health care - we will never "get this Health Care problem in check"

Maybe a new hospital / acute care facility somewhere near Cecil Commerce?

Now that would be a better place off of state rd 23 the future TOLL ROAD >:( I talked with a friend about tolls for this road and he told me it will be a toll road. That no one in Duval wants to raise any taxes not even a 1/2 cent. And since the Downtown bridges will NEVER BE TOLLED AGAIN. I Said fine I still (HATE Tolls) but its not worth a heart attack!

jandar

If the hospital is built @ Chaffee and Normandy, that road will not be tolled.
Plenty of access, even from I-10 without a toll.

mtraininjax

I have no problem with toll roads, use it, you pay for it. I have a Sun Pass in my car for the turnpike trips to the keys, I use the pike over I-95 any day, much faster trip. I have no problem with future tolls, again if you use it, you pay for it.
