Is anything still open on that stretch of Southside Blvd? Sound Advice was right next to that Borders and there was Circuit City right down the road. Also there's the CompUSA that closed, reopened, and then closed again due to moving to the SJTC.

that stretch of Southside Blvd is looking more and more like Regency!

I'm extremely happy to hear that Borders on Southside will not be one of the 200 locations that the company is closing. Jacksonville has a shortage of bookstores to begin with relative its size, and it would have been a real blow to lose Borders. If you guys haven't been out there in a while, check it out. They've done some really nice renovations in the last year or so, and I find it to be the most pleasant chain bookstore in the city.
It's because of these big stores that there are'nt as many book stores...they were put out of business by the corporate mogels of america...long live the local book store down with the big box corporate giants.

Although it's not at the Beaches (maybe we should move this thread to the "news" section so we can talk about the store closings all over Jax and not just the Beaches, or not unless yall want six threads devoted to each side of town :) Just a suggestion) Good news for the closed AJ Wright on Normandy will become a new Marshalls. I'm not sure about the AJ on Dunn.

Different strokes for different folks.

I like Chamblin's, but it isn't for everybody.

Borders, "big box corporate giants" or not, wasn't handed anything. It started with one store in Ann Arbor, and through clever, consumer-friendly business practices clawed its way to the top of the book selling chain. If smaller bookstores wanted to compete, and had a clever enough hook, there's no reason they couldn't give it a try.

You know I have to say that Borders has always been a favorite over Barnes and Noble.  They say due to the E Books, but hell I like to display my reads.  Chamberlains is a new fav!

Chamblins is good. I highly recommend the downtown location!

Btw, Border's Books on Southside is closing.

I always liked how Borders had computers around the store for searching for books and finding their in-store location.

What you read can be a very private matter, and I hate having to ask somebody where to find a book dealing with sensitive subject matter.

Quiznos closed at Hodges and JTB (in the same Publix plaza that recently lost Salerno's and Blockbuster).

Carvel closed at Baymeadows and 9A.

Tango Pizza at 95 and Baymeadows and Abe's Pizza on Beach between Kernan and SJB closed as well.

Sorry meant Chamblins.  I have only been to the downtown location.  How is the other location?

Not very surprising. That whole center struggles except Publix and Starbucks. There was a mediterranean restaurant and a tanning place that closed a year or so ago. Those spaces are currently empty.

i think we all forget that most of these stores should have never been opened in the first place..the numbers that allowed them to be built in the first place were false numbers based on bank support and ceo's trying to boost thier numbers...i gladly see these stores close...maybe next time we allow these companies into our communities we'll scream a little louder....they pushed all of these small book stores out of business and now they flop...."DOWN WITH CORPORATE BIG BOYS" ruining our neighborhoods..now we are stuck with empty shells...i say we burn them to the ground and replace them with a park. Hell...they will just write it off of their taxes at the end of the year anyway..why not...I'd love to see 99% of walmarts closed today...republicans are always screaming "take our country back"...i say that about the complete abuse of corporate america and the abuses they put upon us all.

and the normandy times grill as well. on a side note though, the recently closed A.J. Wright on Normandy next to the times grill is being converted into a Marshall's.

shame I enjoyed the one on Normandy

Me too!  pretty good Happy hour...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."
