i think we all forget that most of these stores should have never been opened in the first place..the numbers that allowed them to be built in the first place were false numbers based on bank support and ceo's trying to boost thier numbers...i gladly see these stores close...maybe next time we allow these companies into our communities we'll scream a little louder....they pushed all of these small book stores out of business and now they flop...."DOWN WITH CORPORATE BIG BOYS" ruining our neighborhoods..now we are stuck with empty shells...i say we burn them to the ground and replace them with a park. Hell...they will just write it off of their taxes at the end of the year anyway..why not...I'd love to see 99% of walmarts closed today...republicans are always screaming "take our country back"...i say that about the complete abuse of corporate america and the abuses they put upon us all.

There is one Borders in Jacksonville and it is closing. I highly doubt that Borders put anybody out of business.

and the normandy times grill as well. on a side note though, the recently closed A.J. Wright on Normandy next to the times grill is being converted into a Marshall's.

All of the Times Grills are being "re-branded" and should be re-opening.

shame I enjoyed the one on Normandy

Me too!  pretty good Happy hour...

Nice.

There was another Abe's location in the Tinseltown area right next to Aroma's - I believe it closed close to a year ago and became something else...Mediterranean restaurant of some sort I believe.

You also need to take into consideration that a lot of these more local chains expanded at the height of the economic boom (underlying causes of said boom notwithstanding), and the boom has since busted.  There's at least a degree of classical boom-and-bust, supply-and-demand factors at work, IMO.

Especially since there's another pizza place not a half-mile up Southside Blvd (Luigi's?), and one on the otherside of the street in the Tinseltown complex (Mellow Mushroom), and one in the SJTC (Librettos), etc.  Over-saturation.

Don't forget Tommy's as well in that area.

Also, Bella (a gelato place) next to the Fresh Market on Atlantic and San Pablo has closed.

A shame, the gelato was pretty good and they were all really nice in there.

jlehr

There's a Renna's in the SJTC too.
Basha (the Mediterranean place that was by the Publix on Hodges) moved to the plaza across the street from the Super Target on Beach, but I'm not sure if it's still open over there.

Tommy's is pretty good. I went to the Abe's a few times near Tinsletown and it was just ok. I honestly can buy the ingrediants at Publix and make my own pizza for alot cheaper.

Agree - and a lot better.

Abe's started off really well, then went downhill and never recovered, quality-wise.

Well, it's official - the closed Times Griil locations will become "The Original Bubba Burgers Grill".

QuoteBUBBA burger announces new restaurant chain, Jacksonville locations

QuoteBUBBA burgers are coming out of the cold of the freezer and into the sun.

BUBBA burger announced today its plans to open four Original BUBBA burger Grill restaurants â€" the first for the new fast casual restaurant chain â€" in Jacksonville.

"Our BUBBA fans have been asking us for years to open restaurants where they could get their BUBBAs on the go when they were away from home," said Billy Morris, President and CEO of Jacksonville-based BUBBA, in a news release. "Our new BUBBA burger Grill will feature the great taste, quality and personality that our customers nationwide have come to expect from our famous BUBBA burger."

According to the release, the restaurant concept will allow diners to choose from all of BUBBA's burger varieties, including the Original, Sweet Onion, Jalapeno, Reduced Fat, Mini BUBBA Bites and the new All Natural Turkey BUBBA burger.

In addition to burgers, BUBBA burger Grill will offer chicken sandwich and hotdog menu selections.

The restaurant chain's website lists the four planned Jacksonville-area locations:

• Point Meadows Shopping Center, 10195 Baymeadows Road

• Hodges Point Boulevard, 13500 Beach Blvd.

• Normandy Village Shopping Center, 5149-A Normandy Blvd.

• Town Center Crossings, 1811 Town Center Blvd., Fleming Island

According to a menu posted on the website, customers will build their own meal, first selecting a burger, then a bun, cheese, toppings, etc.

Sides include fries, chips, chili cheese fries and chili.

A kids menu includes a burger, hotdog, chicken fingers and grilled cheese.

No prices are included on the menu.

In addition to traditional restaurants across the country, the company is looking to grow by opening versions of its BUBBA grill in food courts, airports, college campuses and sporting venues, the release said.

I was right! Wish we could convince them open one Downtown!

The Landing would be a good spot. This is good news as Bubba is a local company.

While I hope they succeed, it's going to be a long, tough road ahead. The restaurant industry is some cut-throat stuff, and with the plethora of FRESH, NONFROZEN burger places popping up across the country (5 Guys, Smashburger, etc...), I can't imagine this place will go too far beyond their regional sphere of influence. If I wanted a frozen burger reheated, I'd go fast food...

Thats my biggest issue too. I can cook a Bubba burger at home for a lot less. What is my motivation for going out?

Went to the Landing for lunch today and by the looks of it Sbarro closed.

I was a bit shocked since it was a food court staple and always looked like it had a pretty healthy customer base.

They will be missed.

Wow, that's actually pretty shocking- they seemed to be one of the most popular stalls in the court.
