Most Vain Cities: Florida Land of Vanity

Men's Health magazine recently conducted research on studying America's "Most Vain Cities."

Here's the process on how Men's Health conducted their findings.

We added up each city's rates for cosmetic procedures (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), Botox users, folks who go for dye jobs, and people who will spend anything to look younger (Experian Marketing Services). We also tallied sales of at-home hair dyes, teeth whiteners, and shapewear (SimplyMap), as well as per-capita rates of cosmetic dentists, plastic surgeons, and tanning salons (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, AMA, and SimplyMap). Finally, Foursquare told us where people check into those salons most often (Men's Health, June 2012).

According to their findings each major metro in Florida outranks Los Angeles, CA. How accurate is this? Is this the sign of Florida's new image?

This is awesome but I'm not sure how we assess the information. Should we be aiming for the number 1 spot? Or, hope to move towards the bottom of the list.

The Sunshine State has a long history of going to great lengths to look good. Five hundred years before Botox, that Ponce de Leon guy scoured Florida for a fountain that could rinse off the wrinkles. Today? Tampa tops our list of America's Vainest Cities, and Miami is eighth.

Is this really a function of vanity or a function of wealth and age. Florida, is a giant retirement community. If the variables analyzed are plastic surgery and "people who will spend anything to look younger..."

America's Most Insecure Cities:  The cities that gave themselves the lowest ratings in looks were:  Cleveland (last), Dallas (second to last), Detroit (third to last), Denver (fourth), Minneapolis-St. Paul (fifth).

Judging Others: When asked about the looks of the other local residents of their cities, the following percentage of respondents agreed with each statement.
