The lovely and talented young Gwynedd Stuart of FolioWeekly will have a coverstory out next week about their former Man of the Year, Craig Van Horne.

I have no idea what the specific details of the story are, but it seems like its going to be a thorough article.

Ennis, as a representative of SAMBA and Louise DeSpain of SPAR will be quoted for the article,

This should be a pretty lively week in Springfield.  Especially now that the City is finally leasing his old 9th and Main space.

Hmm, I wonder if they contacted the designers of 8th and Pearl and his other Springfield visions?

Here is the cover and opening paragragh...

QuoteUrban Legend

Springfield's "Renaissance Man" Craig Van Horn becomes a casualty of the market that made him a hero.

The view north up Main Street hasn’t changed much since 2003. In true Jacksonville fashion, the road construction along that urban corridor â€" which has long made Springfield’s main artery a visual and navigational cluster hump â€" remains in progress. After repaving, widening and landscaping just a third of the 12 blocks slated for renewal, the city exhausted the allocated funds and delayed the project for years. So, more than a half-decade later, cylindrical orange barricades still flank the east side of the road, heavy machinery dots the landscape and most intersecting streets remain inaccessible to turning cars.

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

The City is actually not leasing the space, Mr. Van Horn is.  The city does not have possession of the building yet.  They continue in the foreclosure process, but they can not take possession unitl that ends.  They do have an assignement of the rents, so any lease payments go to them, but they did not lease the space.  Mr. Van Horn did.

I'm surprised people don't interview Stephen more often, his comments are always a good and humorous read.

Is there friction between SDare and Obi Wan Van Horne that a newbie might not be aware of?

Springfield needs to quit lifting her skirt for every developer who drives by in a shiny car.

I know I am stating the obvious, but the saga of Springfield is really tragic.  So many people care about that neighborhood and I think that is what truly makes a neighborhood.

I completely agree with the point that was made several times in the article that it is the individual businesses that will truly spawn the development.  In any city that I have lived in where a once "run-down" neighborhood came back, it was a result of people that truly invested in the community.  Not necessarily for profit, but because that is where they wanted to live and where they wanted to work.  Obviously, bulldozing the history of Springfield to put up shiny new buildings is not the recipe for success.

Well said. I asked this of you in another thread, and perhaps you can address it there, but what "approach" , views, or policies of SPAR do you disagree with? You made some vague references to the older social structure in this thread and others, but i'm curious to know the finer points of your differences.     Thanks.
