New Animal Shelter Opens in Jacksonville



In addition to the enhanced services, the new 40,000 square-foot shelter will serve as the cornerstone of "green" building for the city's sustainability initiative. It is the first newly-constructed building built entirely to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) specifications.

My hat is off to the architect for actually making a shelter a cool design for a project that would typically be plain Jane.  With all of the daylighting coming into the lobby area, most of those lights in the lobby should automatically be turned off with daylight harvesting controls to be more energy efficient per LEED standards.  But, great job!

I was there for the Grand Opening and it is a beautiful facility. Open, airy, well lit and very inviting to human visitors. Not like the old place.  I saw many people adopting animals that day and I hope the trend continues. All of my dogs have come from shelters including two from the Jax Shelter.

Score one for JAX. Huge improvement over the old place and fantastic that they are pursing GOLD LEED. I'm not too familiar with the area where it's located, but I would surmise that this is an asset for that neighborhood as well.

Oh it's an asset alright.  It's in a blighted section of Old Riverside north of I-10.  Let's hope this spurs some development in the area.  I've driven by it a couple times and it is AMAZING.  Truly a masterpiece in Jacksonville.  Bravo.

Wow, I have been wondering for months what they were building on the site as I drove by on 95, I could not be happier that it was this project.

I drive pass the building every morning and have watched it transform from a dirt site to a beautiful piece of architecture. This is an awesome example of green design and to get LEED GOLD is a great accomplishment. The graphics are amazing! YEA for the animals!

I drove past it a few weeks ago and was extremely impressed.  I couldn't see any sinage at the time, so I circled around it a few times to try and figure it out.  If you had told me it was a dog shelter, i probably would have laughed.  This building is great.

No unfortunately its not a no kill shelter. But I talked to a frien over there today and they adopted out over 60 animals just this past saturday alone. Please don't just drive by there. Stop. Go in. Its free..and its air conditioned. You might just find a new best friend.

Not sure who the architect is but the project’s contractor was Auld & White.

Nice article. Really nice facility, MUCH better than the dead-man walking feel of the previous facility. And thanks for putting a Springfield Animal Care & Rescue dog (www.sacarc.org) on the "cover". That is Gus, a 5 1/2 month old hound mix in SACARC's care. Animal Care and Protective Services was kind enough to share their big day with several animal rescues from throughout the city. Gus did not find his forever home on Saturday but 1 dog and 1 cat from SACARC did. A great day for lots of animals!
