13 Gypsies. Too Good To Be True.

I've had the privege of dining at 13 Gypsies --- a new tapas joint on the corner of Stockton and College streets where Pop's Diner used to be --- twice now, and the food was phenomenal on both occassions. I'd say I've tried 25% of what's on the menu (tapas is good for sampling lots of different dishes) and everything has been delicious. In particular, I recommend thier Roman Gnocchi (unlike any gnocchi I've had in the past), the chorizo (they serve it both as a burger --- amazing --- and with sliced pears and candied dates), the risotto (they do different styles every day) and the hummus (topped with honey!!!).
I don't think they take reservations, but I believe you're able to call ahead for a table which I highly recommend considering there are only 14 seats in the entire restaurant.

Definitely give it a try.

My girlfriend and I went there, and we weren't overwhelmed by any strech of the imagination.  I'll admit the gnocchi was pretty good, but nothing else stood out (we had the ham, the cheese plate and the steak).  After reading all the praise the restaurant has seemed to get from this forum I was expecting more.  Maybe it was an off night, but there really shouldn't be any of those in the first couple of months.

Personally I loved it everytime I went there, i've been about 4 times or so and somethings are good, somethings are amazing. Try out more of the menu if you didn't like what you had last time. I've got a few more items on the menu I want to check out. Yes, there is a bit of hype in the air about it but c'mon, a new place that's NOT sushi? amazing!

My favorites include the hummus with honey, the stuffed squid and the angry bull.  I agree some items are better than others and this may have to do with individual taste.  For example, I did not like the gnocchi but others have raved about it.  So, I would also suggest visiting again and trying some other items.

Went for the first time last night with my GF. Loved the decor and atmosphere and the food was great. Definitely recommend.

What is the price range of their food?

Medium priced. Depending on the amount of drinking you do there, I'd say an average couple would spend $20-$40 total, tip included.

Is this place still holding their own?  We tried to go on a Monday (& Orsay, for that matter) a few weeks ago, however, both were closed on Mondays.....

The Compound

they are still open. Monday is the only day they are closed.

Yeah, it's still holding its own.

It's gotten pretty popular now, especially for dinner. I've had to start calling for a reservation (which they do take now) for dinner, otherwise the wait is insane or you get turned away outright. Lunch you can get in easier though. But word has definitely caught on about 13G.

I like the food a lot. The chorizo burger is tasty and a unique offering for the area, the hummus is good, and the double-cow is my favorite sandwich in town. Pricing is reasonable, especially compared to some of the other overpriced local places like Bungalow of Barf.

My only (albeit minor) gripe is the same thing the mentioned in the comments on JaxConfidential's review page, which is that they serve the same greens/vinegarette with EVERYTHING all the time, and there are no other side options. That does get a little old after awhile, it would be nice to have more than one choice for side items.

But I DEFINITELY recommend this place. The food is great, and they do some very unique things, like baking their own sandwich bread. The staff is very friendly as well, and the service is great.

Orsay Closed Sunday and Monday. But will be open for Sunday Brunch Easter weekend (reservations required), but will not require them for future sundays. Seating will be available outside after Easter weekend as well.

Tuesday and Wednesday are good nights to go to Orsay, not really busy, don't forget happy hour 4-7. Half priced apps and drink specials...YUMMY!

Thanks for the plug, mtrain.  Reservations recommended for Easter brunch, every Sunday thereafter is come whenever you like between 11AM and 4PM.  I was at the restaurant for a good chunk of the day today with some of my crew working out details of a few of the new dishes for brunch, and I'm really happy with everything.  13G is my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood - the only bummer about adding brunch to my work week at Orsay is I'll never get to eat there, so everybody else keep supporting them :-)
