Oops.. my bad, I meant to say no black males live in Riverside?

What did they look like to not be living in Riverside? Is there a "look" for Riverside?

And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

I cut myself to feeeeeeeeeeeel pain!!!!

The look of Riverside, at least when I was coming of age was that in order to fit in you had to simply be a non conformist. Which means all you had to do was dress & look exactly like the non conformist do and listen to the same exact music as them.

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

I don't really remember anyone talking much about being a 'nonconformist'.  Except of course for the mainstream conformists themselves.

Most of the Gothic or punk kids just liked the fashion itself.  Still do, in fact.

Just like there is an extreme minority of kids who like to nearly shave their heads, but wear suit and ties in the tropics and confess to nonexistent virginity whenever a similarly shorn clergyman is looking their way.

I know the conformist joke is an old boner, its been around since the beatniks circa 1950, and I bet it was around in the 1920s for the flappers and jazzkids, but having participated full heartedly in the alternative and progressive scene, I can't ever remember 'conformity' coming up except in jokes about being from the land of misfit toys.

We all have our tribes and styles I suppose. Travel taught me that.

Spoken like a true non conformist.

Lol.

I dunno, Im unconvinced that outside corporate cubicles and highschool that 'conformists' actually exist.

What is there to conform to anyways?

Its all on the inside, which is only symbolically visible.

Stephen,

Its been my experience that when someone uses theword conformist, just a shorthand way to diss someone whos lifestyle they don't like.

jokes people, just jokes. Nice debate though.

It was really just a quote straight from a south park episode.

We're all past high school now, the world isn't that black and white. (the conformist/nonconformist thing)

You do have those people that think if you're doing what you like, doing your own thing and if it isn't considered exactly "normal" they would say you're "trying" to be different though. When really like you said, we all have our own tribes we gravitate towards.

Some tribes just have more numbers than others.

i'd rather pay for it with my tax dollars than have them living on the street.  my father lived in public housing as a child, and was able to go to college and pay for his kids to go to Bolles and Furman.

WOW! You are a forgiving soul, aren't you?  The only thing that I want to pay for is prosecution.
