The Mayor's Office announced in a statement today that former City Council member Randy DeFoor had emerged from the Qualifications Review Committee as Mayor Deegan's nominee for General Counsel. The nomination now goes to City Council for their confirmation.

That sounds just dandy.  That darn autocorrect!

So cool Bill  is there... we at Metrojaxhave always promoted various folks to city council and mayoral  administration... Bill is the first  and all of us posters should be proud of him. I  most certainly am!!  Congrats Bill!!!!!!
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Go Tacachale, congrats!  It's about damn time someone from this community made it into the halls of power.

Thanks so much y'all! I'm really stoked about this chance to make some positive impact on the city. It never could have happened without this site and community. There are so many bright minds, great ideas and common sense here — please keep it up, y'all!
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Congrats sir! I know we don't see eye-to-eye as evidenced by some of our back-and-forths over the years but I truly believe you have Jacksonville's best interests at heart. Get-r-done

Al Ferraro has withdrawn himself from consideration for Director of Neighborhoods.

Randy DeFoor has now withdrawn herself from consideration for General Counsel. This comes after several members of City Council had already committed to vote against her confirmation had it reached them. It is unclear who Mayor Deegan will choose to nominate instead.

What was the issue with these nominations?

Of course, it depends on who you ask. The Deegan Administration's position seems to be that the Council members who supported the JEA sale are the same members opposing some of Deegan's appointees. The reason/excuse they are using for the Ferraro and DeFoor nominations is a provision of Florida law that prohibits former employees of a government agency from lobbying that agency for (I believe) 2 years. Ferraro had the added problem of not meeting one of the minimum requirements for the Neighborhoods job by not having a 4-year college degree. DeFoor, IIRC, had the bad taste to oppose the JEA sale while on Council.

Both the Mayor's Office and City Council had requested a ruling from the State Ethics Commission on whether the no-lobbying rule would apply to a former member of City Council becoming the City's General Counsel. However, "News4JAX had heard that some council members have said DeFoor is difficult to work with, and were not going to vote her into that office."
