Music museum planned for old casket factory

Congrats Ennis on being selected.  This is a very exciting project for a number of reasons.  It adds another venue to the "entertainment district" and stretches it slightly farther west.  It celebrates a rich musical history in this town. It provides a music venue to an urban core that is lacking.  I just hope my boy Fred Durst gets adequate recognition!!

A space in the Landing would have been centralized and cheaper, but this is Jax. Sometimes we have to work around situations when logic and long term strategic planning lose out to short term positions and theories.

Any idea of the cost of the full buildout (museum, archive, performance venue)?

According to the JHS, the museum is a future plan that will have to be fundraiser, but they're currently working on updating the building so the top floor can be used as a physical archive. Conceivably that'll reduce the eventual cost somewhat if the building already gets updates on stuff like power, HVAC and ADA compliance.

Unfortunately, state funding for this project ($500,000) found itself on the Governor's veto list this year.

Personally, I would argue that that's a small enough number that the city should just go for it if that's all the gap there is, but I'm not sure if that's the case.

Agreed. If the city is looking for a unique idea that would raise its profile and draw both tourists and locals alike, you can't do much better than a southern/Jacksonville music museum.

Great project! Shame on Dicksantis. Drop in the bucket for such a good cause. Yeah the city should step up.
