Really sad news but Main & Six is closing in March :(

QuoteOne of the most decorated craft breweries in Jacksonville is shutting down just under five years since it opened its doors.

Main & Six Brewing Co. said on Facebook Wednesday night that it would be closing in the next month and a half, with a projected closing date of March 13 — "but as with many circumstances in life in recent years, this may change or occur sooner," co-owner Dennis Espinosa wrote.

Very disappointing news. They'd been pursuing expansion into a rooftop and outdoor space as recently as last year that would have been great for street-level interaction.

Definitely a blow to Springfield and the aura of a Main Street renaissance.  How is 'Strings' holding up?

Why is Strings in quotes? Is that not its real name?  It's doing great.  Packed every Saturday and Sunday for football and doing fine on other nights too.

I'm sad to see Main and 6 go.  Admittedly, I did not go there as much as I should have, but I really enjoyed their beers.  Hopefully someone can continue brewing Swoop Juice and Super Bloom.

Two of my downtown dwellers friends got the bums rush one Thursday night not long ago, watching NFL football there...... It closed at 9 pm.
They were surprised and dissapointed.

How about Silkies?  I love the food but just don't get over there very often to eat.

You know of people 'surprised and disappointed' that a business closed exactly at its posted operating hours of 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM?

If that's the case, I hereby vow to never shop again at "Winn Dixie", "Mayday Ice Cream", "Reddi-Arts", or my local "dentist" as neither are open at 1am.   Come to think of it, I'm cancelling my YMCA (if that's even their 'real' name) membership as well because they won't let me work out at 9pm on a Friday night.

Doesn't that sound ludicrous when you look at yourself in a mirror and repeat these things to yourself?

Not really.  It's Thursday night NFL and its a Sports bar. Not accomodating your core customer base sounds pretty silly to me.  Only a few Thursday's a year you'd have to be open a little later. You could actually use it as a marketing tool.

Wonder if they closed at 9 during the Alabama vs Georgia NC game. Do you know?   It was a Monday. They close at 9 pm on Monday. Judging from what you've written they don't stay open for Monday Night Football either.

Have to agree here... closing at 9 for a sports bar leaves NBA, MlLB, NHL, night time NASCAR, and  Battlebots off the table...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Did you ask your 'friends' if the bar was full when they shut down at 7, or was it pretty empty?  If there were 40 people there then I agree it would be silly to turn away that revenue, but if you're keeping 8 employees at work so 2 people can sip on their beers that's a waste of time and money.

MusicMan

It was 9 pm and pretty empty as I recall them saying.

Were they really a sports bar? I always considered the place to be a craft brewery moreso than a real sports bar.

I had asked how Strings was doing (Not main and 6th). And commented about closing earlier than anticipated on a Thursday night featuring NFL football, presumably the lifeline for a sports bar.

STRINGS.....Family. Beer. Sports.   In that order.

And closing at 9 (5 night a week)  pretty much reinforces that.  Which is fine.  I can assure you my friends won't go back on Thursday evening expecting to watch Thursday Night Football.  I guess they don't do MNF or Sunday Night Football either.

I would imagine as Capt has said, if it's packed at closing tine, they would stay open?

Tacachale

Strings is definitely a sports bar and in normal times it makes sense that customers might expect it to be open to watch games. That said, every business has to make calls like this to make things work. Presumably they shut down at 9 on Thursdays for a reason. With labor and other costs rising and a lot of people still not wanting to go out, it's not an unusual decision.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

MusicMan

Agree.  That being said closing at 9 on Sunday and Monday night would be unusual for a sports bar during football season, as MNF and SNF are huge potential audiences.  If the Jags were playing an away game on either of those nights I would expect them to be open, not usher everyone out because the published hour of closing was 9 pm.

Sports are year round. And they often go beyond 9 pm.  Closing at 11 pm on Friday and Saturday actually is pretty conservative for a sports bar  IMO.

I there another 'Sports' bar serving the Springfield market? None comes to mind.

Gotcha. My misunderstanding. I was referencing Main and 6th.
