From 1564-1565, the banks of the St. Johns River in Jacksonville was home to the French settlement of Fort Caroline. Andrew R. Nicholas tells the story of the fort, the people who lived there and the efforts to commemorate the events with a replica in the 20th century.

All I get is the above picture on a black background, and there doesn't seem to be a way to advance to other images.

When I grew up, we learned Jax geography/history in 3rd grade, Florida geography/history in 4th grade, US geography/history in 5th grade and world geography/history in 6th grade.  Do they still teach in that manner?

I recall fondly learning of the Timuquans (that's how they used to spell it/say it) and Ft. Caroline.  I recall more than one field trip to the Fort but don't recall the damage from Dora which, heretofore, I was not ever aware of.  In those days (before Regency Square too), much of Arlington in that area was undeveloped and rural in character so it was an adventure to go there.

For those not familiar, Charles Bennett was also, for 44 years, the U.S. Democratic Congressman from Jacksonville.  Per Wikipedia, he is tied for the 23rd longest serving member (House and Senate) of Congress in U.S. history (still the longest for Florida) and lived from 1910 to 2003.  He also held the record for longest period of never missing a roll call vote in the House.  More on him at:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_E._Bennett_(politician).

^^^ He was also a member of Riverside Avenue Christian Church and there's a plaque in the park/playground behind the church that is named in his honor.
