Dating back to 1869, the Springfield Historic District is home to some of Northeast Florida's best examples of 19th and early 20th century architecture. However by 1968, the neighborhood was in the midst of decline as cities all across the country suffered from a mass exodus of residents to new automobile oriented suburbs. That year, students from the University of Florida documented many structures throughout the historic neighborhood. Now, five decades later and in the midst of revitalization, The Jaxson shares a before and after look of the historic neighborhood.

Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

What's the story behind that building (#9)?  I had no idea that corner of 7th and Market used to have a large apartment building on it.  I'm glad Terrawise has infilled that whole parcel, but it seems a shame to lose such a stately building.

I was wondering the same thing. I have seen hundreds of pictures of Springfield but don't ever remember this building. It reminded me of a dormitory.

I thought the same.  Even went back and looked at old aerials, and yep, it's there.

That was St. Joseph's Academy. It was a Klutho building designed for St. Joseph Academy in 1908. The academy was affiliated with the Catholic University of America in 1922 and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1934. It was later owned by Jones College before it was destroyed by fire.
