It's a very large telescopic boom crane, in that picture the boom is completely collapsed if that gives you any idea of its size.  Once it's set up like that it's not moving.  My guess is that it's there to lift mechanical equipment to the roof of the Barnett and it will be gone in a few days.

Most times to lift to roof they use a hydraulic crane. I agree with reednavy. Being used to erect tower crane for building the garage.

Well.... it just put an AC unit on the roof..... so 1 point for Acme

Yeah can't imagine it having anything to do with the garage. The garage will be built on a different block and hasn't been permitted.

Not sure what type of crane you are referring to as "hydraulic."  This thing is set up on the far side of a completely different block, on the other side of 3 buildings from the garage.  Plus the garage lot hasn't even been cleared.  Not sure how that would have worked out.

;)  I may or may not have some experience setting mechanical equipment on top of roofs.   None quite as tall as the Barnett though!

Lol first crane in downtown in years? Have we forgotten what helped the Houston Street Manor project go vertical earlier this year?

yet another revitalize projeck in the downtown shooting gallery.

This make the 145th projeck that will bring millions downtown.

So far all it bring is the gender confuse drunks and hipster doofus drunks. And homeless

Among the most recent that will bring millions: convention center (thats the big empty building), overhead train, jax landing (thats the other big empty building, new hemming park (thats the big homeless)

Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

They having an orgasm and getting all google eyed over 1 crane downtown? Oh, I forgot, there hasn't been a significant crane downtown since 1990 I believe. I'd hate to see what would happen, if God forbid, an announcement came out that a 60 story, 850 foot tower was being constructed; they'd mandate a "national crane day" in Jacksonville in commemoration. Let's not speak to loudly about this crane, the project might get cancelled...LOL

I could only see the top of the crane from my office, but that seems REALLY big.  Did they mean 45 ton?

I think they would have to mean 45 - good point. The largest mobile crane in the world is 1,200 tons and looks like this:

While 1,200 is almost three times 450 the crane downtown looked nothing like this.

450 ton was probably correct.  It was a big piece of equipment. That's it's maximum capacity, when they have to boom out way across a road on to the roof of a highrise the capacity is greatly reduced.  Plus you need a crane with a really big boom to get that high to begin with.
