And, isn't it high time to change the name of Confederate Park back to its original name of Dignan Park ???

Why?

RattlerGator

So you think the black population in Duval County, and much of the white community, has some warm and fuzzy softness for "Confederate" Park? A crucial link in what may finally become Jacksonville's "central" park system?

I don't.

The name should be changed for much the same reason Nathan Bedford Forrest High School is now Westside High. It was an inappropriate name, arising from an inappropriate spirit, during a period that saw much craziness and discrimination forced on a vulnerable population, and that should be acknowledged by the city . . . and rectified.

I have no real problem with the Stars & Bars, and I understand honoring those who fought (on both sides). The whole heritage thing, I get it. The memorials that were built in the park -- cool with me. My family has heir property adjacent to the Andersonville National Cemetery up in Georgia. I've seen the memorials to the Union soldiers that died in horrible conditions up there. I understand how important the Civil War was and still is.

But there's appropriate, and inappropriate. The name of the park is very clearly inappropriate. Reassert the original name. Every single time I come home and drive through there I'm stunned the Mayor and the City Council have not addressed this.

Know Growth

I've explored and paddled the waterway in the past couple of years- what a great experience and education. Helped me decide to get the heck out of here sooner than later.

How in the hell did you come to the conclusion of "what I think" after I asked why?? God forbid someone ask a damn question on this site...

I didn't come to a conclusion. You asked a question, and I asked a question in return. Or didn't you notice the question mark at the end of the sentence? I then offered an opinion based on the question, just in case that *was* your opinion -- offering you a chance to respond. And you did. That's the way reading and writing works.

What is going on with Hogans Creek at Washington and Beaver St? Massive project.  Does the DIA have a clue? How about the new guy Griffin that will be going to PARKS as the new PLANNING and GRANTS COORDINATOR? Plan on doing a RICO loop. We can do a Vivian Harrell KJB Bluebag cleanup. Throw in some Environmental Ethics-Vince Seibold.

Any chance we ever see an expansion south of Confederate Park to create something that could be a legitimately used feature in the community?

I believe the Washington Street bridge is being replaced.
