Coming Soon: Hyperion Brewing Company

The following responses are a result of a brief Q&A session with Troy Orton and Alexandra McKeown, the two founding faces of what could become urban Jacksonville’s newest craft brewery — Hyperion Brewing Company.

Awesome! The jax beer bus is going to have to stop for gas with so many places to visit.

Glad to see they're aiming to open in the Urban Core. The more destinations DT, the better. Plus, it will be a good place to grab a pint while waiting for traffic to die down after work.

That's what I was thinking.  5 years ago my friends and I did a "Beer Tour Tour" where we toured all the local breweries (Including the Budweiser plant) in jax.  It was easily accomplished in a day.  We have talked about doing it ever since, but with each passing month it seems we have to add another stop to the list and it becomes a more daunting challenge.

Best of luck to them. Financing is really hard for craft breweries, but if you can pull everything together, the whole city is waiting to support you!
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Local beer craft breweries are more prevalent now than it was years ago. It's great to see most of them staying within the urban core. Denver has plenty of craft and micro breweries littered around town. I see Jacksonville growing up in this venture over time and may rival the 303's soon enough. Proud of my city!
Living in Jacksonville is like living in the province back home... so much potential for growth. not enough gitter done!

Great stuff! They should locate themselves in an abandoned building in Springfield just to round out the core. Intuition- downtown, Bold City- Riverside, Aardwolf- San Marco, and then Hyperion- Springfield. That way you could get local craft beer anywhere in the core. But good luck to them regardless!

Looks like they already have a spot picked out in Riverside.

If they are a nano-brewery, they won't need the high ceilings that Intuition, Bold City and Aardwolf require.  They may need a freight door for deliveries, but 12 foot ceilings would be sufficient. They'll probably be brewing on a 1-2 barrel system like what Engine 15 started with.

I would hope they start out with at least a 10bbl system. Most folks I know in the brewing industry say that they outgrow a 10bbl system quickly and have to run more shifts than they'd planned to keep producing. If they started with <10bbl, they're in for a rapid upgrade (if the beer is good).

Nano breweries are, by definition, smaller than Micro breweries.  I agree that they'd need 10bbl or bigger if they're trying to distribute across the city, but it sounds like that's step 2 or 3 for them. Luckily I think it's pretty easy to pick up a 10 barrel system second hand as many breweries are currently outgrowing that production size.

Now it looks like Hyperion is looking at either Springfield or Murray Hill for their location.
