In relation to this, ISIS Said to Destroy Ancient Temple in Palmyra, I don't really understand how you can compare the removal of Civil War flags and monuments to the complete destruction of world heritage.

you can't.  Its just dumb.

Why don't you go to the Southern Heritage Festival The Farm OffRoad Park - 284 Croxton Cross Road Smithville, Ga 31787

http://www.examiner.com/article/confederate-symbols-heritage-not-hate

In closing, Confederate symbols reflect Southern heritage and serve to honor the brave soldiers that fought for what they believed was right. Regrettably, I must admit slavery was a component but human bondage was also an accepted practice in the United States until 1865 when the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. It is estimated that around 100,000 people were not freed until the Amendment went into effect on December 18. To assume that both of these countries' symbols represent hate and racism because of this is an illogical conclusion.

So, while American symbols at different times in our history represented a country that permitted human bondage, performed genocide, unlawfully imprisoned thousands and sanctioned sexist policies, nobody ever suggests that we should hate them like some do with Confederate symbols. Instead they are passionately embraced by most citizens as symbols of American culture and heritage in the same way that Confederate symbols should be allowed to be embraced as symbols of Southern culture and heritage and not just slavery.

You're starting to sound like a broken record. Having a difference of opinion with someone is not saying that person doesn't have a right to an opinion. And I don't know where you are getting that I am saying the League of the South or anyone else isn't entitled to an opinion.

I am simply responding to your post - it appears to be a repost - where the author states the following:

Join us for a fun filled weekend of Southern Hospitality ( Heritage Not Hate ),..We will have Speakers from The League Of The South, Voice Of The Patriots, & Sons Of The Confederacy.

So they are saying their event is about "heritage not hate" yet they are advertising that the event will have speakers from a known hate group.

I don't understand half of your arguments, I have to admit.

But really - based on what you're saying - what's the difference between changing the name of Forrest HS and passing the 13th Amendment? By your logic, wasn't outlawing slavery basically an attack on Confederate symbols? Is outlawing slavery an attempt to erase or change history?

We live in a democratic society.* If the people want to change the name of a school or remove a flag from a building or monument, what's the problem? No one is trying to pretend the Civil War never happened. In the case of Forrest HS, people were trying to be fair and not force a bunch of kids to go to a school that was named after the founder of the KKK as a reaction to desegregation.

*cue pedantic comment about the USA being "a republic, not a democracy" from people who didn't get past high school civics.

"In the case of Forrest HS, people were trying to be fair and not force a bunch of kids to go to a school that was named after the founder of the KKK." And the Jacksonville man that started this drive got most of his signatures from people around America and just a few people from Jacksonville. Most of the children that go to his school could careless about school. Last year I believe this school was an F school so much for being proud of their new name? ha ha ha. Try and have Robert E Lee name changed, now thelakelander will tell you no one is trying to do this. But one day someone will try but it's OK to you to change the name because if the students vote on it then everyone else should Shut Up! There are some flags I don't like but people can fly them. And I love the American Flag but if I want to protest it one day the Supreme Court says I can.  In closing Adam you act as if I need civic lessons from you. Well I don't so you believe what you want to and I will believe what I want to. Peace to most  :D

The name was changed by the School Board, which is made up of democratically-elected representatives. That is how a representative democracy works.

And for the record - petition or no, apparently 64% of the students at the school favored the name change. So in this instance, I think we can fairly say that the actions of the elected school board officials reflected the opinions of those most affected by the name change.

Adam you and SD always want the last word. ::) But I will still call this school N.B. Forrest as I will still call 20th street expressway 20th street other then MLK and last Everbank stadium is still the Gator Bowl. Name changing is just stupid I understand the Gator Bowl change but then again it's owned by the city of Jacksonville I believe. I look forward to the other name changes to come because they will one day since we all should be "P C" NOT ME!
