As of me posting this it's 81% yes.

I didn't think Alvin was that bad. What defines good mayor? Alvin didn't do any damage, and when someone in the government does nothing bad, that's sometimes all you can ask for.

Will Lenny Curry authorize the cleaning up of The Shipyards even before a developer is in place? Every person knows that it needs to be done, and is the responsibility of the City to do it. Bu no previous Mayor has had the political will or backbone to get it done.

If the prevailing attitude is"Well, lets WAIT until we know what will be done with it" before cleanup begins, then I'd say there is a good chance it will sit for a couple more years.

Cleaning this site up is an investment in the future of downtown. Will a "fiscally conservative" Republican Mayor/former accountant see it that way?

The linked JaxBiz Journal poll is now 81% yes and 19% no. For me, assuming the economy continues to get better.....yes.  If the economy takes a turn for the worst during most of his term.....no.

If Mayor Curry manages to get and keep the right people around him, then yes.  If not or if he allows some of his appointees too much say, then probably not.  And yes, like Lake said, so much of this will be determined by the economy regardless of what the city leadership does.

And btw mtrain, no one likes a sore winner.  I've decided to make a four year tally sheet for you for the next election.  Lets see how these boorish posts stack up.  In the short term though, they simply make people less likely to help the mayor succeed.  In other words you become a stumbling block to the person that you are supposed to be supporting.

I think he will be...especially if, unlike Brown, he comes off his "no new taxes" pledge...rumor has it that may be happening very soon.

Raising taxes is all but unavoidable. There's just not enough blood in this stone to get by without either new revenue or MAJOR cuts, and as Alvin learned that can piss people off even more than a tax hike.

In terms of what the Mayor can actually control or influence, if Curry can implement a sharper method of handling incentives and keep a good working relationship with the Chamber, he'll be in good place. Otherwise a lot of his/our success will be determined by the economy, and how well the mayor responds to it.

Here's the question I have . . . is Lenny Curry really a very "fiscally conservative republican" or is he more moderate and progressive than his campaign message may indicate?  Was that just a slick tactic where he knew throwing in the words "fiscally conservative republican" would automatically get him boatloads of votes in this town?  I don't mind slick politicians as long as they are good leaders and get the job done.  I've seen a lot of slick maneuvers by Curry and his staff which makes me question this and hope that that translates into making the right moves in office to really benefit the city as much as a mayor can.  Here's to hoping he can unite Jacksonville rather than divide it!

raising property taxes is relatively easy....can be done with a majority vote by City Council.  Sales tax increases require voter approval on a referendum.
