Now all we need is a Trader Joes downtown.

I love Trader Joes!!!  I think a whole foods downtown would be better though.

Whole Foods opening a store store at Jax Beach.

Most likely in Office Depot/Marshall's plaza next to Panera.

^ Per the Times-Union, the new store isn't scheduled to open until 2021.

Weird.

and there is news today that Whole Foods is considering developing a lower-cost sister chain

They're moving dirt in Fleming Island too - heard on several occasions that it's for a "high-end" grocer - rumors kicking back either Whole Foods or Fresh Market.

A year ago they did not have plans to expand in this area. They must have seen how well Trader Joe's is doing in Jax Beach and changed their mind.

It sounds like it's likely to be the new chain that Whole Foods announced this week. Smaller store, lower prices geared to millennials.

The office depot and possibly the Marshall's space were a sublet under a lease originally held by Publix.  The terms of that lease would prohibit whole foods from occupying space in the strip.  The indicated delay may have more to do with that than the desire of whole foods to break ground.
