KEYSTONE HEIGHTS - Three weeks ago, Clay County lost the corporate headquarters of what was accepted to be its only locally based public company, American Access Technologies, to Texas.
I don't hear much anguish, though.
"It just means we can't brag about it. Other than that, it's probably a good thing," says Ted McGowan, chairman of the Clay County Chamber of Commerce.
How can losing a headquarters be a good thing?
One, American Access, renamed American Electric Technologies, continues to operate its Keystone Heights manufacturing plant. It had 100 employees, but chief operating officer and Senior Vice President Timothy Adams says seven more were added the past two weeks, and offers are out to another three. He expects more but declines specifics.
Two, American Electric, the merged company, is larger than American Access. American Access posted a loss last year of $25,000 on sales of almost $8.4 million. Its merger partner, M&I Electric Industries, reported net income of $2.4 million on sales of $45.4 million.
