The short stretch of road where Arlington Expressway meets Atlantic Boulevard in front of Regency Square Mall is in line for some major safety improvements.

Florida Department of Transportation engineers have drawn up plans for relieving traffic confusion and congestion where the two roadways diverge, says state DOT spokesperson Ron Tittle.

"They're going to be added lanes to accommodate that, as you merge onto Arlington Expressway," Tittle said. "Coming from Arlington Expressway, if you're going to be turning on to Atlantic, it's going to be easing up some of that right turn, maybe be a freer flow of traffic in that direction. And they're closing off some of the driveway areas into Regency Square for instance."

Officials have scheduled a public hearing Thursday evening (June 26) at the Regency Square Library so people can weigh in on the proposed changes before they're a done deal.

Work on the $6 million project is expected to start next summer.

More improvements.  I always thought that intersection was just odd.  I know back in the day it handled the majority of traffic going into RSM, but now traffic is more focused on heading East on Atlantic.

Stopped by on the way home - only a couple citizens there, and Ms Chaplick the City's Bicycle/Pedestrian coordinator.

Sadly I was unable to be there. Charles anything to report? Any decisions made?

The DOT folk were answering questions from curious citizens.
I left before the "public comment" period, not that it looked like there were any there to comment.
From looking at the maps on display, the work starts about at the Sears entrance from the Expressway, and continues to just past Monument - to the furniture store.  They are going to move the eastbound lanes so they are next to the westbound lanes - like a normal roadway.  The turn from Atlantic to ... uh ... Atlantic going east will move closer to the main Regency entrance, with 3 right turn lanes.  The existing road near the stores on the south side of the road will be removed, and longer driveways put in.  Kinda hard to explain.  I think Ms Chaplick was concerned about the lack of pedestrian features.
