Sean Hall, of the Eastside Reds, and Bill Galbreth of the Westside Giants will be on Good Morning Jacksonville in the morning (7/3) between 5:30am and 6am, and again between 6am and 6:30am

Joining Sean and Bill will be Karen Kaufman and Cathy Campbell to talk about SACARC and their "Dogs for Dogs" during the game. They will likely be on between 6 and 6:30. All proceeds from food and soda will go to help Springfield rescue animals.

Beer Sales will benefit SPAR.

The Springfield Mommies Group will also be doing a patriotic parade before the game, and I hear a large number of people are planning on staying at the park after the game to watch the fireworks downtown. I hear its a great vantage point.

We hope to see everyone out there!!!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Historic Springfield celebrated America's birthday by playing a unique version of America's pastime.

The folks from Springfield played a throwback baseball game Wednesday at Klutho Park, hosted by the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR).

"A lot of the guys (from Springfield) like to play softball," said Sean Hall, who played for the Eastside Reds, "but we thought being the historic district, we'd play a little deadball league."

They played under mostly normal rules, but used bats, balls, gloves, equipment and uniforms from about 100 years ago.

Players said the bats were all wood and heavier than those used in modern-day, the balls were softer and didn't travel as far and the gloves had no webbing and were like catching with a bare hand.

"We're doing turn-of-the-century (equipment) because that's when Springfield came into its own," said Dan Blanchard, a member of SPAR and a player on the Westside Giants. "The gloves are night-and-day from modern-day baseball. There's no webbing. There's no pocket to speak of."

Almost 100 people turned out for the event, which also included a kids' parade prior to the game.

This is the second time Springfield hosted a throwback baseball game. The first was in May on Heritage Day.
