Non-RedNeck Westsider

The thing that really disturbed me was when the Texans went to a 5-wide set... we couldn't do anything defensively.

7 on 5 & 4 on 5 - they whipped us.
6 on 5 and 5 on 5 - they whipped us.

If they would have spread it out for the entire game, they could have hung 80 on us...  We couldn't cover that many people.  PERIOD.

At that point in the game, I think our defense was gassed.  Houston ran some obnoxious number of plays in the last 12 minutes.

Another odd note is the Jaguars have never drafted a player from Miami.

That IS strange, and I tend to forget it because we have employed Miami players who we didn't draft (e.g. Leon Searcy).

OTOH, I think the Jags have taken more players from Florida than from any other school in the draft.

Looks like Henne will get the start Sunday.

Not a surprise. I'm not going to expect much from him as I remember how awful he looked in camp, the preseason and against the Raiders.

Is this the end of the Gabbert era? I hope so....don't think Henne is the answer, but damn, neither is Gabbert.

Yep.  And I'm sure you were probably ready to cut Shorts last year, too, probably Blackmon as well...

What's up with the short memories?   Gabbert was brought in to play behind Garrard for a couple of seasons.  He had more potential than the other QBs that were deemed 'ready' - Dalton, Ponder, Mallet (character issues) and Locker (never had a chance to get him).  Now that he's had to start and doesn't seem ready, everyone wants to throw him to the curb.

We've seen progress, it just hasn't translated into wins.  Is it time to ship Cam out of Carolina, too?

Actually both are false. I've maintained on this forum and elsewhere that Shorts is a keeper. Also, never said a single negative thing about Blackmon. The only thing I'll say about Blackmon is he needs a QB that knows how to run an offense for him to be able to perform well.

Sorry, but I refuse to play around with Gabbert like we did with Leftwich. It's always "give them a chance"...sure, give them a chance, like Cam, if they've shown something worth giving a chance over. Gabbert has never impressed! I've yet to see him make progress over 2 consecutive games. In fact, lately, it looks like he's regressing. I don't want another 1 hit wonder QB (Smith for the Niners last season....Garrard 2007).

This team will live or die on the quality of QB they have. I want a franchise QB. Gabbert isn't it.

I give the Jags one things, they are well coached
What makes you say this?  I don't see a particularly well coached team.

I see a well coached team who lacks talent and depth. I also see a coach staff who have keep the team level headed and upbeat, despite their record.  A poorly coached team would not have put on a performance like they did yesterday. Most team would have imploded by now, like the Cheifs for example. Look at Coughlin last few years here also. They were well coached losers because the team lacked talent. IMO, Mularkey inherited a very bad team. You can only do so much with a incompetent staff.

First sentence = True. Second sentence=easier said than done. Third sentence=Troy Aikman, He finished 1989 with an 0-11 record as a starter, completing 155 of 293 passes for 1,749 yards, 9 TDs, 18 INTs. Troy had some good things going for him, he started when the Cowboys were being rebuilt (like the Jags) had a new coach (like the Jags) and had a new owner (again, like the Jags)  Using that 0-11 record they drafted Emmitt Smith the following year.

I won't say that Blaine will be Troy, I am saying that not all star QB's started in glory. They had to wait for a supporting cast to come around them.

He still has to play better, period.

I agree. He needs to make some drastic improvement. His decision making is inconsistant. Thats the number one issue with him. He also rushes plays and dont allow them time to develop and always look for a checkdown. But I think he knows now that he gotta get it together. I hope Henne does well and can string together a few feel good wins for the season.

These are my issues as well. The problem is....he's had 2 seasons to get this down, and I've yet to see back-to-back games with consistency. One week he looks like he understands, the next week he doesn't.

Poor Gene Smith is toast. You ship off one of your receiver and your QB is benched. I see that is only being the only change in the offseason. Khan has preached about building a stable organization, so I dont see him axing a coaching staff he just hired. That's not how he operates. They'll get to pass go THIS time. If anything, Khan and the coaching staff inherited this mess that WW, JDR and gene smith created.

we have not seen progress and he was not drafted to sit to seasons. One yes. Two no. I still say he let him finish the season.
