Drove by it.. They had all of the windows/whatever open. It had a beach vibe to it. I'll check it out sometime this week.

I went twice this weekend. I had a great time both times. The food selection is pretty streamlined, but it is delicious and fairly priced. The front room is amazing with all of the windows open and the patio-like feel to it. On sunday afternoon there were 18 people in the front room. I watched 15 of those people roll up on bikes and park them in the new bike parking spaces. I think with this being Scott and crew's 5th opening of a bar in as many years, they have hit their stride and know how to design with the end user in mind. I think I may transition out of giving all my money to Scott from drinking at independent and start giving all my money to him via The Garage!

Why again are all the Windows open? Will they be when its 90+ degrees here soon? That front area had a real issue with AC a while back. The bays were fine, but time will tell if Scott put anything into that area for what we all know is coming, the oppressive heat and humidity.
And, that $115 will save Jacksonville from financial ruin. - Mayor John Peyton

Only that front bar has the windows open for smokers etc or if you just want the fresh air. The bigger inside bar is air conditioned with tons of seating, so it has the best of both worlds.  Much better design/concept than Walkers was.

How is a restaurant allowed to have smoking inside?

cline

I believe it is divided up.  One part is the restaurant and the other part is a bar with smoking.  Maybe Zissou can confirm that.

Not sure if I am up to date on the restaurant laws these days but it used to be a restaurant/bar that allowed smoking had to sell no more than 10% food (ratio of 90% alcohol and 10% food). That is likely the scenario at this new venue as I heard they have the old Ivy liquor license. So, technically, they can have smoking, but have to watch the food sales %.

Whenever they are open, the room people can smoke in is completely open with all windows and the front door open. It acts more as a covered patio than a room.

To get to the closed in part of the restaurant, you have to enter through another door on the outside, or through a door in the back of the open room that remains closed.

Edit:Not sure whether this gets around the 90/10 thing.

marksjax

Perhaps that is the case. But the days of a smoking section and non-smoking section sharing the same room are long gone.

I am sure they have it figured out as to what they can and can't do. If they serve food they fall under the state for their restaurant license and inspections. If it were bar only the county issues (and inspects) those.

I was always curious as to how the hookah restaurants allowed the pipes. But that is another topic.
