MAYOR BROWN APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF NEIGHBORHOODS



JACKSONVILLE, Fla. March 30, 2012 â€" Mayor Alvin Brown appointed Terrance L. Ashanta-Barker, an accomplished corporate attorney with a track record of public service, to lead the city’s Neighborhoods Department.



Ashanta-Barker comes into the position with experience as managing partner of the Ashanta-Barker Law Group in Cincinnati, as well as Chief Operations Officer and General Counsel of the Small & Carter Investments Co. in Detroit among numerous other leadership roles. He also has served on the Hamilton County (Ohio) Juvenile Justice Committee, the Board of Trustees for the Economics Center for Education & Research and the Board of Directors for the Starling Project Foundation, an educational program to help young musicians master stringed instruments.



The Neighborhoods Department oversees the divisions of Environmental Quality, Municipal Code Compliance, Animal Care and Protective Services, Mosquito Control and Housing and Community Development. Ashanta-Barker will earn an annual salary of $130,000.



Ashanta-Barker has experience from the Orlando firm of Holland & Knight. He also worked as a senior attorney at Taft Stettinius & Hollister in Cincinnati. He was the valedictorian of his high school, Robert A. Taft in Cincinnati, before obtaining his bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee University and his law degree from Florida State University.
