QuoteGiants were more balanced without having a top ranked offense and did win the Super Bowl.

Here is the link for you to form your own conclusion, the Giants had the 6th best Offense and 13th best Defense in the NFC. The point is that you don't need a top 5 Defense or 1st in D, to get to and WIN the Super Bowl, but you make that decision at NFL.com;D

http://www.nfl.com/stats/team

QuoteNow you're saying abandon the defense? Seriously?

Nope, just playing the stat game to show you that you don't need to build the Taj Majal of defenses to get to the Super Bowl. Something this team has yet to shed in the post Del Rio era. I would really like to see Mularkey put his stamp on this team and make us into more of an offensive powerhouse. We shall see.

We obviously didn't have the flagship defense last year. We did improve drastically though. I like the way it was done too - Through the draft with Alualu / Pot Roast & Cox and then adding some missing pieces through free agency that were nothing other than spot on. The resigning of key players this offseason should hold together the improved unit overall... and again... if we can make the same strides on offense through player / personnel moves then we will be much more competitive for the long run. Gene has done it already on defense so I have to believe he can do it again on the other side of the ball.
And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

Did you even go to NFL.com and look at the stats of the Jags? We had the WORST offense of 32 teams in yards per game last year. Dead last. 2010 -15th, 2009 - 18th, 2008 - 20th, and 2007 - 7th, our best offensive showing over the LAST 5 years, and we went 11-5.  How about a look at our Defense over the last 5 seasons, glad you asked, in 2011 - 6th, 2010 - 28th, 2009 - 23rd, 2008 - 17th, and 2007 - 12th.

So in our last real good season of 2007, we went 11-5 had the 7th best offense and 12th best defense. I am probably tweaking the stats, so I am open to finding fault in these numbers, but I wanted to keep this current, within the last 5 years. Obviously the Coughlin years are open to discussion, but he won Super Bowls away from Jacksonville and its really a sore subject to most fans.

the same fans that ran him out of town on a rail, I'm willing to bet.  (hmmmmm, maybe the fans aren't always correct.)

The other candidates were Sharks, Panthers, and Stingrays.  I think we got the best end of the deal given those choices.

I think I would've liked the Sharks (of those choices) because of the history.

I think a name more like the Browns or the Packers or Steelers would've been nice - not an animal, but rather something that refers to the owner (which we had with the Bulls) or something regional. Maybe the Jacksonville Sprawl  ;)

Can we at least agree that the newer helmet logo and uniforms are better than the original helmet logo and the all teal uniform with the jaguar racing stripe thing?

Thanks for the stats - you just solidified my argument that Gene Smith was right focus on the Defense during last offseason and he did an outstanding job. From 28th all the way up to 5th! Now we're in the same position with the offense... if only we could find a GM that can make huge strides with a unit year over year. Oh wait I know just the guy!!

Not 5th, 6th actually. Where do you keep getting 5th?

My bad. 6th - I stand corrected and now go on record to let everyone know through the help of your helpful stats  that we the Jaguars we're in fact ranked 6th last season. Up 22 spots from 28th to 6th.

Not 5th... 6th.

Though not as good as 23 spots.  MTrain is right, our defense Sucks!

Oh, and while you are at it, please let me broadcast that our OFFENSE, you know that thing you use in the NFL to score points and win games, fell from 15th to 32nd, or in our case, DEAD LAST.

Which doesn't matter of course because as the Patriots & Packers & Falcons & Saints proved - you don't even need to field a defense to win the super bowl. Just score a whole bunch of touchdowns and hope that you're lucky enough to be holding the ball when the clock ticks down to zero. It's all in the stats man.

Pay no attention to the defensive powerhouses like SF or Baltimore or Pittsburgh or Denver or Houston or NY that also participated in the playoff's. One of which who won the superbowl by beating the #1 rated offense otherwise known as the "Point Scorers" --- That was just a fluke.

So you're upset that GS addressed the part of the team that was ranked extremely poorly instead of the part that was better than average ???

And BTW - The Packers suffered a significant slide too... although unlike us it was on defense and look what they got for trophy... a late first round draft pick.
