When the Jaguars’ sale closed and Shahid Khan became the team’s official new owner Wednesday, he asked a server to bring over champagne as he met with local civic and business leaders over lunch.

“We sent over to the stadium to find a bottle of champagne and the poor waiter came in, he was so nervous,” Khan said. “He’s not used to serving champagne at lunch.”

When lunch ended, it was back to something that had consumed the eight days Khan had spent in Jacksonville working on the transition to becoming the team’s owner. Khan left and interviewed a head coaching candidate.

“It’s nonstop,” Khan said in an interview with the Times-Union. “This is a one-owner-at-a-time league, [but] that doesn’t mean we can’t prepare. We’ve had our first 25 plays and we’re executing them. This is not something you wait for. We know who our top three choices are. All three are excellent.”

To Khan, speed and discretion are the two most important factors in the coaching search. He expects to do this quickly and quietly, much like how he purchased the Jaguars.

“Discretion is a very valuable asset,” Khan said. “So, keeping this stuff confidential serves the Jaguar fans as well as any prospective candidate.”

Only Khan and Jaguars general manager Gene Smith know the full list of candidates the Jaguars are considering, and Khan said the list does include well-known names, but declined to say who they were.

The interview process began this week, even before Khan officially took over at 1:35 p.m. on Wednesday. Interim head coach Mel Tucker has already interviewed.

The names of five offensive coordinators the Jaguars have requested to speak with became public this week â€" the Jets’ Brian Schottenheimer, the Patriots’ Bill O’Brien, the Broncos’ Mike McCoy, the Panthers’ Rob Chudzinski and the Falcons’ Mike Mularkey.

Khan said there are more coaches the Jaguars have requested to speak with which have not become public. NFL Network reported Wednesday that Cincinnati offensive coordinator Jay Gruden is the “favorite” for the job, but the Jaguars aren’t known to have requested an interview with Gruden.

Khan said the Jaguars have spoken with or will speak with several candidates the public doesn’t know about.

“What you are seeing is tip of the iceberg,” Khan said.

Asked about coaches who have won Super Bowls with other teams, Khan cited history.

“Statistically, we know those are the people who maybe did it once, but I don’t think anybody’s done it twice with another team,” Khan said. “To me there’s always the first time. We’ve talked to people like that. To me, I want to learn. They want to talk to us, so why shouldn’t we talk to them?”

As Khan sees it, there are three crucial attributes for the team’s future head coach.

He should be able to work well with the leadership in the building now, including general manager Gene Smith. He should have “the desire and the will to win,” and he should be willing to engage with the community.

He sees the direction of the team’s offense as important, but added he doesn’t necessarily think the head coach should be an offensive mind.

“It’s been proven to me, people want this job,” Khan said. “The area, the players, whatever the reason, I don’t know. But the fact is, there isn’t anybody we’ve contacted who said, ‘I’m not interested.’ Flip side, there are other names that have contacted us that we thought might not have an interest. … It’s a wider net than even we thought because of the volunteers.”

Something else interested Ive discovered. some very good QB's that had worse rookie seasons than gabbert...

Knowing this, why do we have such a " the sky is falling"phobia with Gabbert? Is it because historically the Jags have had bad luck QB? Is it because his rookie counter parts are having unusual, record breaking rookie seasons and its making him look bad. Can anyone explain it? IMO, Gabberts playing like a true rookie, and actually has had a better rookie season than the QB's listed above.

You and I don't, but unfortunately there are alot of misguided Jag fans out there. Sometimes I think that we are the most retarded fan base in the NFL. Because of the man crush that many have for lil' Timmy, the average Jag-Gator(large part of our fan base) want to give up on Gabbert, and fire Gene Smith; They only showed their ignorance at the Colts game by booing Gene Smith, the guy who fixed the D.

Having grown up in Redskins country, where every win leads to a Pollyana reaction that the team is headed to the Super Bowl and every loss leads to Worst Coach And Quarterback EVER condemnation, I'm certain there are lamer and more misinformed fan bases out there.  I think our problem is more that with a smaller market we have less margin for error when a segment of the fan base decides to, e.g., fall in love with Timmy.

I was not happy at all about the Smith booing.

I have no doubt that they probably approached him, but he seems to be content with his studio gig.  At least, that's what he's been saying.

Shahid said on the radio yesterday they have interviewed  people that haven't been rumored yet and he wants to keep it quiet. He also said people have approached them about the job. Sounds like the rumor that no one big wants to come here is bunk. People will go where they will get paid.

If I remember correctly, from the last game's broadcast, add Peyton Manning and John Elway to that list.....  It appears that Elway had a comparable passer rating with more interceptions than TDs.  Peyton Manning had a better rating, however he finished his first year with the Colts at 3-13.

You right Dan. The NFL is all about the money. The other NLF owners did not like Wayne weaver because he didnt have as much money as they did. In the words of Jerry Jones, Khan is one of the more "financial suitable" NFL owners. Bottom line: If you pay it, they will come; players and coaches alike.

Year 2 will be the big litmus test for our QB.  In contrast to Elway and Manning's first year, their second year was pretty much an inverse.  For example, the Colts finished 13-3 in Manning's second year.

IMO, if Gabbert is as good as hyped, he should have a great second year giving us a solid shot at the playoffs and potentially a division title.  Assuming the defense is comparable to the '11 season and we lock down a solid reciever or two, I see no reason why an even slightly improved Gabbert couldn't bring us home a 10 win season.

Wacca Pilatka

I was a Broncos fan before there was a Jaguars (hangs head in shame) and was a witness to Elway's first season.  He made poor decisions and did indeed duck and cover quite a few times in the face of pressure.  He threw 14 INTs against 7 TDs (in only 250 or so attempts - Steve DeBerg replaced him quite a bit), and completed 47% of his passes (though that was less appalling of a figure then since DBs could get away with more stuff).  5 of the 7 TDs came in two very good games against Cleveland and Baltimore, and the rest of his output was rough to put it politely.

The next year, with Mike Shanahan coaching him, some improvement to the WR corps, and an offensive line that gave up 20 fewer sacks, he threw more TDs than INTs and improved his completion percentage to 56%, stood in against the rush more confidently, and the Broncos won 4 more games.

In fairness to Wayne, he paid Del Rio handsomely after 2007; and I'd add that I don't want us to hire a big name just for the sake of doing so if he's not the right man for the job (and we should not react negatively or assume Khan is cheap if he hires a coordinator rather than a Cowher or Fisher).

The rumor that people don't want to go to Jacksonville is entirely routed in the media's ignorance of Jacksonville and the Jaguar organization.  It's built on the assumption that the team is cheap and the fan base is apathetic.  It's the sort of thing that was said about Tampa in the pre-Dungy years when the team was indeed cheap, had a very poor player evaluation record and front office personnel, and drew 30,000 a game.
