The Jaguars, who are 3-8 heading into a Monday night game with the San Diego Chargers, plan to announce the move at noon Tuesday.

Del Rio was the second head coach in the team's short history, replacing Tom Coughlin in 2003.

Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker is the leading candidate to take over the team on an interim basis.

Chris Mortensen is ESPN's senior NFL analyst.

Good for Mel. Though I'm happy for him, I hope he doesn't do TOO good. I'd like a proven head coach to step into the position full-time.

Interestingly, The Times Union is running the opposite story:

Wayne Weaver showed again Monday that he is one of the most patient owners in the NFL.

The Jaguars are 3-8 and eliminated from the AFC South race, but Weaver didn’t make a head-coaching change Monday.

There was much speculation that Weaver might make a move after the 20-13 loss to Houston. Two of the Jaguars’ next three games will be on national TV, against San Diego on Monday night and Dec. 15 at Atlanta. Del Rio’s status will likely be the subject of much speculation during those national telecasts.

Weaver declined to say Monday why he seems reluctant to make a change during the season.

Weaver’s only comment, through a team spokesman, was repeating the statement that he made after the loss on Sunday: “That’s for another day.”

Did you see who wrote the article?  It shouldn't surprise you that it was ass-backward.   Now for Gene Frennette to backpedal and say that we should have kept JDR at least until the end of the season.
