QuoteThe Summit Group Inc. of Sioux Falls, S.D., was permitted by the city on May 30 to begin construction on the foundation of the future aloft Hotel River City Marketplace on Skymarks Drive near the intersection of Interstate 95 and Airport Road. According to the building permit, the 136-room five-story hotel was designed by Leo A Daly, a planning, architecture, engineering and interiors firm from Atlanta. Harrell Contracting Group LLC of Jackson, Miss., is the listed contractor.

According to its Web site, aloft is the lifestyle brand of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Inc. of White Plains, N.Y. Along with aloft, Starwood Hotels and Resorts owns nine hotel lines, including Sheraton, Westin and W Hotels. The Summit Group has partnered with Starwood Hotels and Resorts to develop the Jacksonville site, which will be the first of six aloft hotels to open in Florida. With eight alofts in operation worldwide, Starwood plans an aggressive opening of alofts through 2011 with 67 scheduled to begin operating in the U.S. and nine overseas.

Examples of Aloft Hotel.  Too bad downtown could not trade the Southbank's Hampton Inn or Extended Stay for one of these.

Aloft in Washington, DC

Aloft in Downtown Wilmington, NC

I guess, we'll get the suburban model like this one in Rodgers, Arkansas

I have good luck with Starwood. The unfortunate thing for the River City Marketplace and the northside is that they will never truly get "upscale" retailers because of the beast of Bentonville.

what tha???  because of Wal-Mart?  i don't think that shuts out the entire northside forever.  you do?

Seems like I read about some new "hip" urban style hotel to be built in the Southside area a few months ago - geared toward the business traveler.  May be where the Shula's franchise is going, or, I may be way off........

I thought Shula's restaraunt was going in at the Four Points Sheraton they built off of Gate Pkwy, by the library....

Yes, Shula's is will be at the Four Points Sheraton.  Another restaurant is going to be at Hotel Indigo and Tapestry Park.
