How long has the building been empty?  Or has it been empty?

Didn't we used to have Rose's in Jacksonville years ago?

Far as I know, Roses has never operated in FL before. All of the states that Roses have operated in are NC, SC, GA, KY, TN, VA, and MD. Look up Roses on wiki and they have plenty of info. I would post the link, but it's a dumb link with parentheses, which I don't know how to pull up.

When I told my mother about Rose's, she said that there used to be a location on the Westside many moons ago...

There were Roses stores in Jacksonville in the late 1960s early 1970s - I dated a girl who worked in the one on the Arlington Expressway - it was on the other leg of the "L" from Publix.
Here is the wiki-link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roses_%28store%29
Definitely the same logo as back in the day.

Now, since ownership has changed since then, this might be the first "new" Roses in Jax.

My bad. Let me step aside, because the old schoolers are preaching the truth. LOL

BTW Charles, thank you for showing me how to pull up parentheses links. :)

I went to the website, then copied the URL from the address bar, and pasted it here.

Roses, is the flagship store of the Variety Wholesalers, there is a 'Bills Dollar Store' in Wewahitchka, and another in Bonifay. Bills Dollar Store is a smaller footprint version of the flagship store.Maybe it's just me, but in my travels I have found these lesser known chains superior in many ways to the corner Wal-Mart.  From 'Fred Myers,' 'Alco,' 'Fred's' etc... I just like them better.

QuoteAbout Variety Wholesalers

John Pope, as a 24-year-old in 1949, took over the family business of five small dime stores in eastern North Carolina which became “Popes” stores. Successive groups of stores were purchased in subsequent years, including the following major purchases: 52 Eagle Stores based in Charlotte, NC purchased in 1971; 54 McCrory/United Stores based in Easley SC purchased in 1978; 118 Value Mart stores based in Hattiesburg, MS, and located principally in MS, LA and AL, purchased in 1980; 145 Super Dollar stores based in Raleigh, NC and located principally in NC, VA and SC, purchased in 1981; 53 P.H.Rose stores based in Henderson, NC and located principally in NC, VA and SC, purchased in 1984; 106 Allied Stores based in Savannah GA and located principally in GA, SC and LA, purchased in 1989; 33 Maxway stores based in Sanford, North Carolina and located principally in NC, GA and SC , purchased in 1990; 60 Bargain Town stores based in Montgomery, AL and located principally in AL, MS and GA, purchased in 1992; 106 Roses stores, based in Henderson, North Carolina and located in 10 states of the southeastern United States, purchased in 1997; and 118 Bonus Stores/Bill’s Dollar Stores based in Columbia, MS and located principally in AL, GA, LA and MS, purchased in 2003.

Variety established a reputation as turning around companies in retailing with its successful purchases (from Chapter 11 or post-Chapter 11) and restructuring of the Bargain Town, Maxway and Roses retail chains. All of these became profitable within 12 months of purchase.

For locations they want second and third generation plaza's or urban spaces with at least a 25% African American population within 5 miles. This would seem like a slam dunk company for several vacant spaces in and around downtown Jacksonville.  HELLO SPRINGFIELD?  DURKEEVILLE? LAKEWOOD or University at Old St. Augustine Road... an abandoned Publix.  This could be big for Jacksonville's recovery, so jump on those keyboards and lets tell them they'd be welcome.

When you posted the link, I realized that the left parenthesis on a link is "%28" and the right parenthesis is "%29". I'm definitely not the most computer savvy person on MJ. LOL

Agreed. Around that same time period there was also a Rose's co-anchoring the Publix plaza at University and St. Augustine Road. My mom used to shop there a lot in the early 70s. When Rose's left,  that location was vacant for a while and ultimately became Stein Mart. I recall that location being the first Stein Mart in Jacksonville, but another old-timer would need to weigh in on that.  ;)
