ITS GO TIME! Anyone want to see a statewide Urban Waterway Destination in Downtown Jacksonville? Huge announcements coming soon. Anyone want to join me in an ACA class 9/17 and 18.

Anyone outside of Duval county goes to the top of the list.

NavyGuyAN

Hey NOONE!...Is there any way you can continue North of your launch area on the creek or is the clearance on that small Arlington Expy overpass (between Washington and Union) too low for a kayak to go through?

Noone

Its too low. If you want to go sometime just let me know.

NavyGuyAN

Will do...paddled all the way up and back on Fishing Creek yesterday...and battled the wind, waves and boat wake just north of the 103rd street bridge on the Ortega and my arms/shoulders need a break...lol. Have you paddled Cedar Creek and the Ortega River?  (South of 103rd St)

Noone

No I haven't.
I've paddled with North Miami once and Fishweir creek which is part of his neck of the woods near you. After paddling with North Miami I needed a break we were on the water about 8 hours.
Is that part of the JMM Jacksonville Marina Mile?
Kayaking opportunities as it relates to economic development is in its infancy stages especially Downtown.
I'm still trying to understand our message to the world

VISIT JACKSONVILLE!
or
Don't VISIT JACKSONVILLE!

Do look forward to paddling with you one day. Have a lot of people on the list that want to paddle Hogans Creek. This is Dist.7. Councilman Gaffney needs to wake up. What will be our message to our Regional Partners? JCCI study, Recession, Recovery and Beyond.

I've gone from Stinson Park all the way up to Westside Regional and Tillie Fowler.  That's a real nice trip, very scenic.  As a matter of fact, putting in at Westside Regional and paddling up to Collins Road and back is my next trip.  The only thing that sucks is that you have to carry the kayak quite a bit through the trails at Westside Regional or Tillie Fowler to get to the river from the parking lot.

We paddled the Cedar River from San Juan to Liverman Park a couple of weeks ago. Very nice paddle. Everyone we met was friendly and power boaters were polite. Once under the canopy the transition is amazing - like going back in time. Some litter especially in the bridge areas but on the whole it was a very pleasant day.

We love doing the urban creeks and exploring, you can't beat them for a windy day trip or when you just want a short paddle. We save a lot on fuel too.

bobsim, Thanks for posting and the photo tour as well. Obviously a special place and another of many treasures that lie within our urban Waterways and adds to the cumulative effect of why we would say VISIT JACKSONVILLE!

I love the yaks too. It was like breaking out the fine china as compared to the ones I've used. I just want to say "Take me with you!" Great trip! I want to visit your neighborhood.

Do you know who your councilman is? Carter? Love? Just not sure the district your in. But this just highlights how we can be viewed as a joke when we can't get the Downtown councilman to do something with the pier (Redman) and Hogans Creek (Gaffney) as it relates to Public Access and economic opportunity.

bobsim

  Thank you Noone,

The yaks are a far cry from fine china, we're pretty tough on them. Last year  we realized how much we were spending to rent and building them was a no brainer. We are looking at doing the Fishing and Butchers Pen creeks (same area) soon also. The folks we met there were great.

I live in old Arlington, councilman Gaffney. I will contact him with regards to Hogans Creek, check for PM later.

Hey FIELDAFM!...
Instead of dragging the kayak through Tillie Fowler Park, you can put-in at Ringhaver Park. To get to the canoe/kayak launch area; park at the very end of Morse Ave. (which dead-ends into the park) and the walk isnt that far. Next time I go I was going to put-in at this location. I still cant believe you went all the way from Stinson Park! I guess the next time I go, I'll make sure there isnt a 1-2ft. chop on the Ortega when I go. I was planing on going past Collins, 295 and Blanding and seeing how far up the Ortega I can go into Argyle. When I was kayaking on Fishing Creek this past weekend the creek was 3 feet wide and 8-10 inches deep where we turned around (too many fallen trees) just shy of reaching 110th Street.

Lake, Great work again. This is Dist.7 and this creek has the immediate potential for a pocket pier on this urban waterway.

On Friday Oct. 8 city hall Conf. room A ste. 425. the Jacksonville Waterway Commission is holding a subcommittee meetining on FIND. With a new city council and Mayor and with the commissioners of Find meeting Nov. 12 in Duval county this could be a huge opportunity for the people of Springfield.

FIND projects are introduced and acted on in phases.

Springfield residents if you want action now then show up at this meeting. Otherwise it could be another election cycle before your concerns are heard. (4 years)

Springfield, Where are you??

The Aug. 31St Waterways subcommittee meeting on canoe and kayak launches by FIND would have been a slam dunk if somebody shows up. A decision has not yet been made. Does anybody care?

FIND is good

Jacksonville is LOST

council meeting in 5 days

Making a scene on our 2Nd most important Waterfront Public Access point that can also be an identified FIND Upcoming project submission for Dist.7 was Bridges and Amanda.

A morning shout out and we were on the water in an hour. And it was a pleasure to share this Urban Waterway Destination that can be part of a vibrant Downtown Experience. What a beautiful day. We arrived together and unloaded the kayaks and carried them to an FDOT launch location under Duval St. next to the casket factory and old St. Lukes Hospital. It was a high tide and and the creek was a slick calm.

We took a relaxed paddle out and just discussed all the what ifs. The tire was in the Mulberry tree and the shopping cart depth meter chart was a couple of inches below the surface. The entry into the Maxwell House grounds had a post card feel with the sun, sky, and water all showing the beauty that we were experiencing by paddling through this space.

Our exit out into the river and just feeling the current starting to increase we took it back in. The paddle back in was awarded with Bridges spotting a plover on some of the concrete chunks. A souvenir brick for Amanda. The shopping cart depth meter chart is still submerged under the water. we are in good shape.

We continue on and the green heron nest is still in the oak tree. We see some of the homeless camps and we paddle by someone that is still sleeping in. The garbage is back and has collected in some of the concentrated areas. City cleanup will be next weekend and looking forward to it. We all looked at the yet unidentifiable railroad light pole, casket factory advertising pole, or street car trolley pole. Lake,Ock any announcements on what it is?

What an unbelievable activity to share with them today. I shared with Bridges and Amanda my immediate concerns.

What will we be telling our Regional Partners?

VISIT JACKSONVILLE!
           or
DON"T VISIT JACKSONVILLE!

Legislation will tell us. 2011-560 ready for council in 3 days. Be concerned.

Who's next?
