A new look for Winn-Dixie

Family Dollar isn't a dollar store, they tend to prey on poor folks who can't get transportation to bigger stores, their prices are usually pretty high for stuff.

As for not wanting to contribute to Dollar Tree, I can understand that- I mentioned in another thread that the local dollar store chains are pretty different but Dollar Tree has most of its stock specifically made for it now and for a lot of things like the packaged groceries, you can actually get them cheaper at other stores, besides the bread there aren't really any good deals there. They've been caught importing electrical items from china like bulbs and extension cords that have fake UL cert tags. No huge deal there except for the fact that they're pretty likely to either electrocute you or burst into flames.

i didn't know the bit about the faulty electrical stuff.  i've never had a problem with anything i've gotten from dollar tree.

I don't mind shopping at Dollar Tree for paper goods, plastic cutlery, pencils, pens, floss and other basics on the cheap...

I guess I just don't like cheap! No, not cheap staples, cuz you generally have to use more. No, no cheap anything will do for the most part. And I am sure our new dollar emporium will turn into a pit rather quickly! For the record, I seldom go to the SJTC, so it's not a matter of either or. I guess I am also trying to do more with less these days. Lots of dollars can add up quickly. I am a coupon user but only for brands/items I buy anyway or can get away with. (See my post above. That was an honest mistake.) Frankly, I just wish the price was the price and we didn't have to run around shopping literally or figuratively in search of the best deal. Can you tell I don't like shopping? There I said it, a woman who actually doesn't like to shop! Not one bit! What a chore!

There is a big difference between the "Everything A Dollar," stores and Dollar General, Family Dollar, or Fred's Stores. The former really is an emporium of the cheap, while the latter 3 are all more like mini-discount department stores.  Get ready too because here comes the new "Wal-Mart Express" chain, with stores about 1/10Th the size of regular Wal-Mart's and located in suburban neighborhoods, rural areas or communities too small to have a big box store.

BTW, the new Dollar General on highway 207, west of St. Augustine, actually appears designed to fit in with it's country setting. While they obviously didn't spend the mint on the facade, it actually looks like it belongs out on a country highway, perhaps they'll do as well downtown.

Why did you post that pic Ock.  I absolutely HATE that store and am forced to drive by it regularly.  I'm simply amazed that the county allowed something that hideous to be built in that location...

"I like Dollar General because I don't have to dress up to go there like I do at Wal-mart!"

Wal-Mart Express.  :-(  When Home Depot announced their smaller stores, Jay Leno joked that we used to have those before Home Depot ran them all out of business.  They were called hardware stores.  I guess the same thing can be said for neighborhood discount stores like Peterson's and Pic 'n Save.  Wal Mart ran them out of business, and is now opening smaller neighborhood WalMart Express stores.

Oh...and the downtown Winn Dixie just had an overhaul.  It was excellent at first when Juan Mott was the manager.  It's not bad now, but it was way better then.  I don't ever find the parking lot to be a filthy mess, but maybe I've just been lucky and caught it right after the swept.  And I don't mind waiting in line a few minutes, either.

My understanding is that mini-box stores like the WalMart Express are chiefly designed for areas that are too small (or otherwise don't have the right conditions) for a full sized big box store. They won't be opening in an area that would cannibalize sales from a big box store in the same chain nearby, so they won't be exactly equivalent to the neighborhood stores of old, which were, well, in every neighborhood where there was demand.

These are more equivalent to the urban big boxes they started building a few years ago; they're not really doing anything new, they're just trying to adapt their model to reach areas they haven't broken into yet.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

because, you know, they're not already making an enormous amount ov money or anything.

Exactly.  Thereby underselling any independent stores in those areas "they haven't broken into yet" until they (the independents) are out of business.  :-)
