Yeah, and Saved by the Bell.  The St. Johns isn't a bay, I'm not sure Bayside "works."

Are there any historical names for the area?  The Florida theater is sort of the central point of the area...

I'll vote for something historic or "Jacksonville-esque".

I like that Jax uses "bank" terminology...so, I don't mind something straightforward like the "Northbank Entertainment District."

Get the pier going and then the "Bay Street Pier District" ?

Historically, you've got some wharves, shipbuilding, ship repairs, etc...so how about, for example, the "Liberty Ships District"? (An older MetJax thread states the Liberty Ships were built near Metro Park though).

Get the corny one out of the way.

The deposits really stink.

Here's mine

Exchange District.

Have to admit I like the Core and District.

But moving forward we are going to be changing it up a lot.

Also, Market is the street that the great fire chased the residents of jacksonville right up to the waters edge and then into the river.  The Spike is located on the riverwalk that marks (kindof) the jump point into the river.  It could be called simply "the Spike"

Historical and edgy...I like it.

The trouble with "naming" an entertainment district after the fact is that whatever you push on people is going to seem kinda corny. I kinda feel that a district should remain true to the earliest original function of that district possible (think of the Meatpacking District in NY, Court street district in AL). Something about the allure and history of a district draws people in. And if you can sell that history, people will flock there. Think of Riverside/Avondale in this respect.

So, with that in mind, I think Court District or Legal District or Noone's Exchange District.

After the fire and rebuilding, what was the primary use of that area?

I could be swayed in the direction of the Exchange District.

See how New York City have their own names of their districts...

Trinity
Bowling Green
Chinatown
Chelsea
SoHo
East Harlem
Knickerbocker Village
Fort George
Financial District
Hamilton Heights
Washington Heights
Midtown Center
Manhattanville
Upper West Side
Theater District Times Square
Lower East Side
Greenwich Village
Wall Street
Kips Bay
East Village
West Village

Do you see a trend going on here for NYC?

See how Jacksonville have their own name of their districts...

Bay Street
Springfield
Confederate Park
Hogan's Creek
The Piers
The Southbank
Metropark
The Jacksonville Landing
(Help me add more and I will update this list)

Do you see any trend that can help with the naming of the so-called "Entertainment District"?
Lot of the names are based on Southern terminology, type of environment (NYC has more of village-like areas), and the culture epicenter (German, Irish, Japanese, Chinese, etc. etc.)

What's the historical connection with the term "Exchange" district?

What's the historical connection with the term "Exchange" district?

Stephen touches on it with the Navy connection.

You and I have actually been there and have seen the Monument on Exchange Club Island. Which is another future Waterway destination. We will USE the RIVER.

The legislation 2010-675 and the USS Adams may or may not be at the Exchange District but the Navy and maritime connection will exist if its moored on the Southbank or Northbank.

We are a hub of Commerce. The ability to showcase our port.

Also Exchange to showcase the variety of Flex Space activities that will occur in the District.

Here's my .02:

I always think of the area in my mind as E.Bay due to the street signs, but Ebay's lawyers may not approve of our using it, plus I think it sounds a bit too much like a parody of Ybor.  (J)Action-ville sounds like what you would call the city after too many drinks, though this could be appropriate if this is going to be a bar/entertainment district.

I like Ock's suggestion of the Bay Tree District--brings to mind an arboreal gaslight district.  I always wondered where the mythical Jacksonville Bay was located anyway, so it's good to know the name refers to a species of tree rather than a nonexistent body of water.  It's also not so far removed in nomenclature from the current Bay Street entertainment district but is much more picturesque and verdant sounding, and a bay tree image juxtaposed with the Jax skyline could be used as part of the branding (Big city urban amenities with just a touch of small town Southern charm).  The question is, does anyone know if there are any bay trees currently thriving downtown and if not, could they be planted in an urban environment and survive?  I'd hate if it was called the Bay Tree district and there weren't any bay trees around!

Easy to fix, we can get em by the pot full, and really probably should at least have one on the corner of market and Bay, great spot for a historical marker on the founding of the city... A marker that DOES NOT claim we were once called 'Cowford.' Based on the history of that time the community that had started developing around 1800 was probably called 'The Hart Settlement,' which just happened to have a livestock ford in the deep narrows of the river.
